submitted to the CJ

The Cumberland Cycling Team has been racing a great deal lately. On August 25 and 26th, Roger Whitlock, Jonathon Thompson and Jack Evans participated in the BMW Cycling Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  This race consisted of a road race and a time trial on Saturday and a Criterium on Sunday. The road race climbed and descended two mountains, covered 62 miles, and was particularly brutal. Jonathon Thompson placed 8th in his division in the three-staged event and Jack Evans placed 10th in his division. Roger Whitlock, the club time trial specialist placed 10th in the CAT V (all ages) time trial.

Also on the weekend of August 25 and 26, Mr. Aaron Denney participated in the ABR Fort Ben Stage Race in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr. Denney placed 4th in the time trial event and 3rd in the road race!  Despite these good results, he was unable to get a good general classification in the entire race due to crashing in the Criterium stage of the event.

Other recent races have seen the Cumberland Cycles multi-sport athletes doing several very difficult triathlons and biathlons. Dr. Mark Henry recently participated in a triathlon in Columbus, Indiana.  DR Swanner and Dave Stewart both participated in a 100 mile relay running event in Bloomington, Indiana.

Here is the Cumberland Cycles roster. These are folks who have raced or toured for our club this year.

Crew News - August 28

  www.cumberlandcycles.com

Hello Crew!

RACE SIMULATION - WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT MEECE MIDDLE SCHOOL
EVENT START:  6:30 pm

This is a very short, very fast course.  Be advised that it may not work out.  There may be school events at the field that would prevent us from doing it.  But show up anyway, and we will simulate a race to the Barnsburg Church if the parking lot is not available!

Hard Team Ride Thursday
Instead of doing hill repeats this Thursday, the "team" will meet at Barnsburg and ride an aggressive ride - probably the usual but to include coal pit.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT
All this talk of race simulation and hard rides - we are focusing our racers on our final events which are to occur with in the next three weeks. A lot of our crew has been racing since last February, so our efforts as a shop team are focused on "peaking" our folks who have been racing all year.  We are all focused on Tour De London.

All of this may sound as if we are excluding are non-racing or beginning crew, but rest assured, we are not. We simply want to field the strongest possible team at the London race as we can. Our racing crew has several thousands of miles in this year and over a hundred races.  We want to take these last few weeks of our first racing year to focus on them in the Kentucky Championship race.

After September 15, the shop and the team are going to promote a series of rides for beginners and tourists.  From the middle of September to the first of November, these rides will be non-aggressive and aimed at helping anybody who wants to consider racing next year.  Please, if you have an interest in racing bikes, we can put you on the path!  Now is the time to get your gear in order, and spend the fall and winter training with us!!!  No matter what shape you are in, you can do it, and we can help!

We want to "cross-pollinate" all of our groups this fall. There have been several groups riding this summer, as well as the team.  But I do not have a lot of information on the other groups, so I would like to take this fall, and have all of the area cyclists spend some time together!  A great place to start would be our annual dinner at the Doolin House!

Cumberland Cycles can do amazing things next year!!!!!  Heck, we did amazing things this year!    Don't miss out.  Now is the time to catch the wave for next year.

Barnsburg Time Trial
Barnsburg Event #6 will be held this Sunday at 2 PM.  This is an eight mile time trial along Barnsburg Road - out and back (4 miles then turn around).  Staging and parking will be at Barnsburg Church, but the start/finish is located one mile west of the church on Barnsburg Road.

You do not have to be a racer to post a time!!!!!  Come out and ride the course so you can monitor your fitness in the future. Cumberland Cycles will be conducting this series again in 2008!

Remember, the 2 PM starting is "first rider off" and you need to get checked in and get your start time between 1 PM and 145 PM at Barnsburg Church. We are hoping for a good turnout.

Volunteers needed!

YEAR END RACING
Kentucky State Championships - Tour De London

Be sure to come our and support our racers on September 8th and 9th!!  Cumberland Cycles wants to have as large a turnout as possible and this includes supporters!!!  The Sunday race will be the most exciting to watch.

Annual Dinner
The Doolin House, October 6, 2007 - 7 PM.  Please RSVP JT as soon as you can. Family members welcome!   The Doolin House

Remember to support Cumberland Cycles in any way possible!!!!!!  It is time to get started on 2008!!!

Year End Racing and Activities

Hello Crew!

This week team training:
Hill repeats Tuesday and Thursday at Haynes Knob - Vision Center at 6 PM
       all invited to attend
Crit Simulation:  Meece Middle School:  Start 6:30 PM - a 45 minute workout
       all invited to attend

Our Focus is for the Tour De London, September 8 and 9.

PREVIOUS WEEKEND RACING ACTIVITY
Jack Evans, Roger Whitlock and JT all raced in the BMW River Gorge Stage Race in Chattanooga, Tennessee Saturday and Sunday. Scenic City Velo . Jack and JT raced in all three staged events, road race, time trial and Criterium.  Roger did the time trial. This was a serious race with some serious competitors!  And it was great fun!  The road race course climbed two huge mountians. Jack, JT and Roger did very well. Results will be posted on the above link in a day or two.

The best result of the BMW weekend was Jack's 7th place, same-time finish in the crit!  WAY TO GO JACK!!!!! Jack was racing against some of the strongest racers in the south! Roger also came in with a very respectable placing of ninth in the CAT V time trail.  Remember that he is in his 40's, but was competing against all CAT Vs over the age of 18!  JT was very happy with his road race result, 17th, but had mishaps in both the time trial and the crit!  He narrowly escaped a bad crash in the crit.

Mr. Aaron Denney raced with Cumberland Cycles friend, Mr. Bob Brooks at the Fort Ben Stage Race in Indianapolis this weekend.  Aaron placed 3rd in the road race, and 4th in the time trial in the CAT V/Open Categories. But he crashed in the crit and came up with some damage to his bike and his body wasn't able to finish well in the crit so he did not place overall.  Aaron was set to place in the top three of the entire event until he crashed out of the crit. Aaron's efforts certainly produced our most significant results fo the weekend.

CRIT Simulation - Wednesday nights at Meece Middle School
Wednesday night, August 29th:  Simulation starts at 6:30 PM

We only have short time to get ready for the tour de London, but I think we might have a good "race simulation" course.  Yes, the racing season is almost over, but I think it would do us all well to do some fast cornering and some race simulation in the Meece Middle School Parking Lot.  The course is six-cornered, 0.31 mile course and if we can ride this a couple of times before the Tour De London Crit, it might help acclimate some of our riders to CRIT riding.

We will conduct this exercise on Wednesday - August 29, beginning at 6:30 PM and again on Wednesday - September 5, beginning at 6:30 PM. Meet in the Meece Middle School Parking lot ready to go by 6:30.

This will be full-up race simulation Criterium - one bunch start with the first four laps neutral. Just like sanctioned crits, we will let the simulation go for forty-five minutes then have a five lap count down to finish.

Show up as early as 6 PM for a full explanation of the course and the process.
volunteers needed!!!.

OUR FINAL THREE WEEKS OF 2007
We have had a great season.  Far, far in excess of what I had hoped for!  We all need to pat ourselves on the back!  But before we do that, lets keep the ropes tight on what we have coming up. After 62 bike or multi-sport races, and 187 individual starts,  our final event will be our most fun and probably our most important.  September 8th and 9th:  Tour de London Downtown This is the Kentucky Road and Crit Championships and we have riders who will place in the top five or perhaps even win!

This race has an open/citizens category so place come out and race no mater what level you are at! Also, If you've been following us all year, please come out to watch the events!  Sundays Crit will be the most exciting to watch.

In support of our final race the team and any club member interested will be doing hill repeats this Tuesday and Thursday - meet at the vision center at 6 PM... Haynes Knob at least five times.

There will also be a crit simulation in the Meece Middle School Parking Lot on Wednesday night at 6:30.

BARNSBURG TIME TRIAL EVENT #6
Sunday, September 2 first rider off at 2 PM!  No matter what your condition or your interest, please come out and post a time for this 8 mile event!  We will keep track of your times, and you will be able to monitor your progress in fitness or racing condition! You will love it!

Cumberland Cycles
Remember to support Cumberland Cycles in any way you possible can!  The shop has been very good to our team this year, and we want to thank Marc Travis for all of his efforts in our development.  We have new T-Shirts now so if you want to come out and watch Tour De London, you might think about doing so in a Cumberland Cycles T-Shirt!  Our crew will not disappoint you!

We are continuing of 08 Team Development with sponsorships and uniform design. Stay tuned.

And please do not forget about our annual dinner, October 6th at the Doolin House!  If you've put a bike seat on your tail end this year, we want you to come!  RSVP JT Please at Moonsovrbend@aol.com

If you are interested in racing, you should know that our yeam fevelopment will begin on November 1, 2007 - Nobody dropped - In general, It only takes about six weeks to bring a raw cyclist up to a good fitness level and foudation.

Good turnout for Team Hill Repeats!

Tuesday night saw a total of eight Crew riders show up for Rogers hill repeat workout!  Fantastic!  This group met at the Somerset Vision Center and rode 6 miles out to Haynes Knob and proceeded to climb the one mile hill a total of five times!  The ride out and back was very nice and fast. The hill climbs were burtal but the entire time, I just knew it was exactly what I have been needing - a good,hard-core max effort to wake my legs back up!

The really exciting story regarding tonight's ride was the fact that Jenney Denney inadvertently attacked the crew on the way back into town and put several of our male riders in jeopardy of being dropped!  Jenney is getting very strong and we are so pleased to have a female rider riding so well!

Hello Crew!

Brad Herman will be doing a reconnaissance ride of the Tour De London course on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Brad just wants to ride the course to get a feel for it as he was unable to join the crew last Saturday. Meet Brad at the Farmers Market, in downtown London at 10:00 am Wednesday for the 41 mile ride.  You can reach him at 606-416-4148.

Debbie Fortenberry's 102 mile Colorado Ride - a Cumberland Cycles ride report

Hi--I'm Deb Fortenberry, JT's girlfriend.   I now live in Colorado Springs, CO, (many years ago, I lived in Somerset, which is how I met JT, but we'll leave that to another day) and am looking forward to meeting all of you soon.   I am also planning to do a bit of racing next year--inspired by reading about many of you and all that you have accomplished this year.   I have never raced before and the thought of it makes me nervous.   I have done a few touring rides over the years.   Today, I accomplished my fitness goal for this summer: to ride the Stonewall Century. I wanted to share with you a bit about this experience.

The Stonewall Century is a  challenging road bike ride along one of Colorado’s most beautiful scenic highways called the Highway of Legends.   The most prominent features of this area of southern Colorado are two mountains, one 13000+ and one 12,000+ in elevation known as the Spanish Peaks.   The mountains are particularly dramatic because they are isolated from other ranges in the area and they have rock wall formations called dikes surrounding them.

I just learned what forms the dikes and have to share it from the ride website:

The stone "walls" are igneous dikes (shallow intrusions) which exploited structural trends in the country rock. The dikes radiate out from the West Spanish Peak like spokes on a wheel. Basically, molten igneous rock intruded into fractures below ground, then the surrounding rock was eroded away, leaving the dikes standing. I've read that there are more than 45 dikes, although I've not counted them myself. The most noticeable are the Devil's Stairstep (about 4 miles into the ride), the Notch (or Dakota Wall) about 9 miles into the ride, and, of course, the great wall in the town of Stonewall.

So it is in this remarkable setting that the century takes place.

The ride starts in La Veta, Colorado, a quaint mountain town located in the lush Cuchara Valley.   This year, we have had consistent moisture through the summer so a great variety of wildflowers are still blooming.   I traveled to La Veta Fri evening to register and stayed nearby for the early start.   I started the ride at about 700am, a bit later than I intended because of a near catastrophe of locking myself out of the house where I was staying.   Luckily, crisis was avoided and I started relatively on time.   I understand that I'll have to pay attention to timeliness next year if I want to race...

It was cool enough that I started the ride in arm warmers and kept them on until the serious climbing started.   The elevation at the start is 7,013 ft in the La Veta Town Park.  From there, the road climbs to Cuchara village (8,500 ft), to the first feed station (1/2 mile before the ski area), to the top of Cuchara Pass (9,945 ft).   This side of the pass is relatively short and steep, but with fresh legs, it didn't seem too bad.   Not so on the way back!

From the top of the pass, the ride winds through some high lakes including Monument Lake, snuggled in among the peaks.   On that descent, my top speed was 53.1 mph--I heard a couple of guys say they hit 60 mph!

The route continues to descend to the beautiful town of Stonewall, with a massive dike just before entering the town that is the town's namesake.   Riding down that pass then seeing that ancient wall seemingly jut out of nowhere has given me a feeling of awe both times I have ridden this ride.

The ride then follows the lush Cuchara River Valley, crossing the river several times to the turnaround lunch station at Segundo, which is not far from the New Mexico border.  I cannot fail to mention that the ride is fabulously supported by many local citizens who make homemade brownies, cookies, cupcakes for the feed stations together with all kinds of fruit and other yummy stuff (the eating was splendid!).   I'm hoping that the races have similar eating opportunities!?!

The way back is a bit daunting.   One gentleman said it was "twice as far back".   It certainly seems harder.   First, the river valley back to Stonewall is a slow grind up.   With tired post-lunch legs, it drags a bit.   The thing that kept me occupied though, was the view of the Stonewall--like a magnet pulling me back, pictured below:

Climbing the pass the second time is truly difficult.   The pass tops out at 9945 in the 85th mile of the ride.   I recall the last time I rode it a couple of years ago, I really thought I would have to get offand walk the last steepest part.   This year it was tough, but my consistent climbs of Cheyenne Canyon paid off and I was even passing people on the pass!   Here is a link to the road profile:

http://www.spcycling.org/RouteAndProfile2.pdf

While I was stopped at the last feed station at the top of the pass, listening to so many (men) groaning about the climb we had just finished, my sweetheart, JT, called---perfect timing--and we talked for a few minutes about how pleased I was to have the climbing and the ride nearly complete.

From there it was a quick descent back to La Veta with a barbeque at the town park.   There were two massage therapists giving massages right in the park--and of course I needed that before my drive back to Colorado Springs.   I'm hoping this service is available after each race?   I arrived home, tired but happy, I had completed the 102 mile ride, 7500 feet of climbing, but most satisfying was the beauty of all that I had seen in this beautiful place I call my home.

Tour De London Course Recon

Tour De London Recon Ride
Cumberland Cycles Team members, Roger Whitlock, Jack Evans, JT, DR Swanner, Dave Stewart and Nick Cabrinni all went over to London this morning to meet with some folks from the London Bike Shop to recon the Tour De London Road Race Course. It was a great, and cohesive ride with everybody staying together.  Our pace was quick at about 18.5 MPH and the relief over the 41 mile loop was about 2000 feeet. Our club time trial specialist, Roger Whitlock (affectionately known as "Roe-shey") was at or off the front the entire day. A true hammer head Roger is, and he considers sitting in the wheels for the weak!  That is why he has been placing 3rd and 4th in regional sanctioned Time Trials this summer!

For our course ride, Jack stayed on Rogers wheel most of the day and launched a couple of attacks as did JT... But in the end, Jack and JT were content to let Roe-Shey pull the train down the rail.

Dave S. launched two very significant attacks over the course of which Jack and JT benefited greatly. DR was able to attack and bridge back up to Roe-Shey late in the ride as well. Nick rode consistently.

We want to thank David, our tour guide from the London shop. He was very strong and was always right with us!

Tour De London Promotion

guest entry by Mr. Dave Grisby: The Bike Shop, in London, Kentucky

September 8th and 9th is the 2nd annual Tour De London road race and Criterium. This year we are also the official USA Cycling Kentucky State Championships for road and criterium.

I wanted to first invite all of you to come down. Come and race, or come and volunteer, or just come a watch. Its all good.
We need volunteers for the following positions:

Corner marshal - piece of cake job where you simple wave riders safely through the various corners along the course and hold up any oncoming traffic that might impede them. Hey, you get a free Volunteer t shirt too.

Motorcycle or vehicle lead- another really fun job. You basically stay about 50 to 100 yards in front of the peleton with your flashers on to keep any oncoming traffic aware that a group of crazy cyclists are about to come by. One of the most fun jobs in a race. Quiet motorcycles preferred as the Harley types can give the leaders a serious headache after a while. LOL.

Follow/wheel truck- Bring your pick up truck and we will fill it full of spare wheels. Follow the group around and if a rider has a flat, just stop. Its the riders responsibility to get his wheel and make any repairs. My mom can do this one. biggrin
But most of all we want you to come down. Even if you just want to watch. Its all good.

Here is the website: http://www.tourdelondonky.com

Notice that the winner of each main category who is a resident of Kentucky will win a Yellow State Champion Jersey.

As always we have lots of people jumping into the citizens’ category just to finish the event, another great way to do this beautiful course.

The course is all marked, so feel free to come down and pre-ride the thing. Huge Green arrows mark the first half, and huge red arrows mark the return trip. Huge White arrows marked 'HC' are for the 2 shortcuts used by the hand-cycle division and the 2 youngest Juniors categories for an 18-mile loop.

Anyway, please help me spread the word if you will. Feel free to paste this message on any other forum or message board you like so we can make this one of the premier cycling events in our state. Tour De London is all non-profit. If we ever see any returns it will be put right back into the race for prizes, signs, new categories, bigger payouts, you name it. Next year, we hope to add a Time Trial to make this race an Omnium.

Crew News - August 15

Hello Crew!

Barnsburg Rides
It appears that our non-racing crowd is far out numbering our racing crowd.  This is really very good.  Tuesday and Thursday nights at Barnsburg with the team ride are inevitably contested. And that is not always good for our crew. Yes, our racers need hard workouts, but we also need to foster development for our up-and-coming riders. I was really glad to see about 12 medium pace riders show up at Barnsburg tonight and go out for a ride. This is exactly what our club needs at this point in our first year.

I think we had about 20 riders out at Barnsburg tonight and that was great. The medium paced folks left out earlier but then the five racers left and caught up with them. Some of the mediums left that crew and joined the racers.... Three notable performances tonight were that of  Mr. Jay Garmann.   He placed the entire group under general attack and he has certainly gotten much stronger this summer!  We want to congratulate him and encourage him to keep coming out because he has the makings of a great racer. Dave Stewart and DR Swanner, our two top multi-sport athletes are getting very strong on the bikes.

We have a lot of riders who are doing very well. To see so many people showing up for our Barnsburg rides is just tremendously encouraging to me. We are going to have a great team next year, and it is going to be great fun!

Cumberland Cycles
There are not very many races left in the year.  We have BMW in Chattanooga, at least one more club time trial, probably two, tour de London and then our own Burn side Race. Some of our club members have been extremely active this year and I am so very proud of what we have done here this year!  We have become noticed regionally in our races - and this is thanks to club members JT, Jack Evans, Aaron Denney, Brad Hermann, Adam Bourne, Roger Whitlock, Charlie Bailey and others.  We have several riders ranked #1 in the State of Kentucky in their age and cat divisions. What more could a team captain ask for?

Let us now look to the Tour De London  - the Kentucky State Championships, and see if we can't pull off some really high finishes.

Annual Dinner
We will have our first annual dinner on October 6th at the Doolin House, in down town Somerset. We need for everybody to RSVP so that we know how much food to order!  We will send out RSVP instructions later.
