Crew News

Hello Crew!

Well, this is really kind of embarrassing, but I messed up the date for the team and club photo session again. It is NOT this Saturday, but next Saturday.

THE TEAM AND CLUB PHOTOGRAPHS WILL BE DONE ON SATURDAY, FEBURARY 9, 2008.  I am really very sorry for all of the mix-ups.... But this is the final date!!!!  I promise...

Here are the details again:

Meet at the bike shop (Cumberland Cycles) at 4PM.  After the photos, for anybody who wants to, the club will migrate down to the Burnside Pizza Pub for beer and pizza.

INVITATIONS:
Photo #1:  Everybody who has a bicycle and lives in South Central Kentucky and would like to support our team and club in this manner.  Come as you are.

Photo #2:  Everybody who supports the club and team in any completive or sporting manner (MTB, Multi-sport, Club, Tour, Sport, Track, Road Race or Multi-sport support swimmers or pure runners who have raced with our crew mates (and especially sponsors)).  This photograph will require some garment of Cumberland Cycles (except for sponsors)... If you don't have anything, we will find something for you if you want to come out!  Please just come out and we will get you in the photo!

Photo #3:  The Cumberland Cycles Road Roster. This includes everybody who will compete in a USA Cycling Event or multi-sport event in 2008 . Please wear the 2008 Team entire... Road or Multi-Sport.

Portrait Photographs:  As a road or multi-sport athlete, we will ask that we can take your individual photograph.... These photos will be used on our Internet Sites for race, team, and club promotion.  It will be used to "bio" our team and club.

Mt Biking
Tent Pool and several other of our mountain bikers have been very active this winter. They've been riding some of the loveliest trails in the Daniel Boone National Forest.  Last Sunday, the MTB Crew rode about 8 miles total, and during their ride, they found a nice, river-worn boulder to rest on... Wow, It makes me miss the woods.  Trent and the gang have been doing some great trail rides over the last several weekends in the DBNF and the BSFNRRA.. Be sure to contact Tent if you'd like to join them in their MT Biking Adventures!  TMPOOL525@alltel.net.

Club and Sport Cycling

The road racing unit of our cycling club has held our club president, Brad Herrman, hostage for many months now.  He and our club VP, Charles Senters have been very busy organizing Somerset's first USA Cycling Event in history. That event goes off on March 22, so after that, the racing team will release our club officers to focus their official business to the club and sport riders in our community.

It will not be too much longer before the weather warms up and the days get longer. I am looking forward to seeing all of our cycling enthusiasts on the road in 2008.  Please let us know what we can do to facilitate a successful 2008 sport cycling season in our community!!!

ROAD RACING

Bard Herrman and Charles Senters have done an outstanding job bringing the Kentucky/Indiana Spring Road Series to Pulaski County!!!  This event is now official and is a part of a nine race series. That series website can be found here:  http://www.kyanaseries.com/

The race flyer may be found here:
Mount Victory Road Race

This event will start and finish at the Stab Firehouse.  This is where the Sam Catron Memorial is located. It will leave the firehouse area and span out to Mt. Victory and come back.

If you are considering entering this event, please bare in mind that this is a highly completive series and while you are encouraged to come out and race, the Kentucky/Indiana Series races are not generally considered to be an easy place to begin your racing career (unless you are a junior racer). Bike races later in the year generally have a novice or citizens category, designed to give the beginning racer a taste of what bike racing is like. Those races (later in the year) are a better place to start. If you want to race in The Mt. Victory Road Race, you will need to become certified at USAcylcing.org.

BUT If you are a cycling enthusiast in our area, WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!  We need volunteer course marshals by the dozens, so please contact Chuck Senters (zapodx@newwavecomm.net) or Brad Herrman (flyingchicken55@yahoo.com) if you can help out in any way.

If you are going to race with us this coming year, please visit our USA Cycling Web Site:   USA Cycling Clubs - Cumberland Cycles, Inc

Here we are. 2008

Hello Crew!

Barnsburg Time Trial Series

The time is upon us all - February 10th will be the first date of the 2008 Barnsburg Time Trial Series!!!  We will conduct this event every month from February until October. This year, the event will probably be sanctioned by the United States Cycling Federation (USCF/USA Cycling), and racers will be out to obtain fast times. But as always, and especially, it is open to everybody in our community who wants post an individual time for the eight mile course. As a club and team, we are more interested in having our community riders using this event as a gage to their own fitness over the next year than we are in attracting elite athletes. PLEASE COME OUT FOR THIS EVENT and complete the course the best you can... all year long!  Our racers will be out to compete, but our club and MTB athletes should use this event for what it is... an Individual Pursuit of fitness and health. Please come out and ride. Posting a time in this event is an individual show of support in our club and team and is not an easy thing to do.  Most of all, it is a show of support to your own cycling and fitness.

IT IS TIME FOR THE TEAM AND CLUB PHOTOGRAPH!

Saturday,February 2 @ 4 PM @ Cumberland Cycles Bike and Skate Shop
Beer and Pizza afterwards at Burnside Pizza Pub

WAXING POETICAL

Wow, we've come a long way in the last 12 months. We have had several road riders become ranked #1 in their categories in the state of Kentucky. At the State Championships, we had silver medals in both the road race and the crit. We have an individual (Aaron Denney) ranked #1 in his age/cat in the USA!  Our Barnsburg Time Trial Series attracted some very fast riders.  Roger Whitlock put a time trial team together to compete and they won first place!  We've sanctioned a cycling club and team and we were able to bring a national level race to Pulaski County on March 22, 2008.  Additionally, we had many team member compete in multisport events and either won or placed very highly  The credit for all of this goes to everybody who turned a bicycle crank for our club and team in the past five years!!!  Sport cyclists, mountain bikers, road cyclists and multi-sport athletes.  When I began cycling again eighteen months ago, I was very pleased to find a very active group, intact and motivated. Those fellows and gals kicked my butt for a period of time... and it was great. The Somerset/Pulaski County area has been a cycling community for much longer than my appearance on the scene and I appreciate everyone who has been cycling here so much.

There have been so many people involved in cycling here over the past five years, I can't hope to list them all. Some have come and gone. Others are very much still with us. Some have even moved to other towns and become very competitive on other cycling teams. And we have many new-comers, of which I am one.

Our Road and Multi-sport riders having executed such a wonderful 2007 season, our club and team have gained sponsors for the 2008 racing season to assist our area cycling athletes monetarily in getting to races this year. Our Title Sponsor is Cumberland Cycles Bike and Skate Shop.... and that organization supports us all in a nuclear manner. The bike shop keeps us on the road;  keeps us all abreast of currentcycling technology and acts to keep all of the team and club riders in good mechanical condition.  In 2008, the bike shop will attend a number and races and will provide mechanical support as well as feed and moral support. Without our bike shop, it would be very hard to promote cycling in this area.

Our general Sponsors for the 2008 season have donated monies to be used by our cycling athletes. This money will assist our athletes in getting to completive events, offset the cost of our team and club uniforms and will aid in the pursuit of personal athletic advancement and general well being of several fine people. I am personally overwhelmed by the gracious contribution of our sponsors to our cause - personally fitness and well being  for our cycling community.

IF YOU HAVE EVER TURNED A BIKE CRANK IN PULASKI COUNTY, PLEASE COME OUT FOR OUR TEAM AND CLUB PHOTOGRAPH.  IT WILL BE A GLAD TIME..... The more folks we have, the better it will be for all of us!!!!!   If you don't have the 2008 Uniform, please bring the older gear.  If you don't  have the older gear, please wear what ever you want....  This is not just a cycling team.... it is not just a cycling club... it is a community...  and the only requirement for membership is a desire to support your fellow club mate/teammate - fellow human being.

If you come out for the photo, don't think of it as a team photo - think of it as your individual support in people who want to be the best they can be -including yourself. Think of it as supporting the people in your community who want to be as healthy as they can.

Saturday, January 26 - 4 PM at the bike shop.

After the photographs, for those who want to, the club will migrate down to the Burnside Pizza Pub and have dinner!

RECENT TEAM AND CLUB RIDES RIDES
The team has been training together every weekend and then some. Everybody is getting very strong and ready for the road racing season to begin.  Incidentally, our road season begins in three weeks and will continue every weekend until about October. Our Multi-sport athletes continue to train hard as well. I see many of them out running every day over even the coldest of days Our multi-sport athletes will begin their season a few weeks later than our road crew.

Our Mt. Bikers continue to ride up a storm.  "Unfortunately", they also take some of our roadbikers with them. I say unfortunately because this makes our road bikers a lot stronger, and much harder to handle on road rides!  Today, Trent Pool and our other MTBers from Somerset Community College hosted a ride out in the DBNF and our very own Marc Travis went with them. Apparently it was a very scenic ride, very cold and difficult!  These six MTB folks digested portions of the Cane Creek Wilderness, consuming 10 or 12 miles of rugged trails under a delightfully cold, but sunny winter sky. I can't even imagine how beautiful it must have been.

OUR RACE

The Cumberland Cycles Bicycling Club and Team are hosting a Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series Race on March 22. This is a nine race series that ranges from Owensboro, Kentucky to Henryville, Indiana, to Somerset, Kentucky. While the competitors are not required to participate in all nine events, the Series will crow a Champion in each category based on points acquired in each event. This is a very prestigious early spring cycling series that has been going on for 28 years. As it turns out, our race will award Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Points!  As a club, we are very proud to be hosting a race of this caliper in 2008.

We have had generous support from Businesses in the Somerset Community for this race. Brad Herrman and Charles Senters, two of our club officers, have been working many hours, submitting numerous permits, meeting with DOT officials, speaking with and emailing USA Cycling personnel to get everything organized. NOW WE NEED TO ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT!  Several of our team members will be racing in the event, but we would like to ask our MTB and Sport riders to volunteer to help marshal the race as we will need several dozen folks to pass the race off as a success.

Remember, we will have the highest caliper racers coming to Somerset.... and this race will probably be conducted for the next couple of years. Anything you can do to help out will enhance road cycling in our community greatly. Please contact Marc at the bike shop for more details on how to get involved.

Intial notes on the Mt. Victory Race

Mt Victory Road Race - Spring Series

Welcome to the Pilot running of the Mt Victory Road Race, a part of the Kentucky/Indiana Spring Bicycle Road Series.  This event will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2008.

The cycle-sport athletes of the Somerset, Kentucky and Upper Lake Cumberland Region our proud of our training grounds and we hope you will find racing here to be a beautiful experience.

The Mt. Victory Road Race will begin at the Stab Firehouse (elevation 830'), located just off of Kentucky Highway 80, east of Somerset.  For those of you who are GPS informed, you may program your device to 37 09.074 N by 84 25.213 W.

From the Stab Firehouse, the course proceeds east 4 miles to Adams Grocery (GPS 37 08.623 by 84 22.240).  The course then turns south (right) on highway 1675 and immediately ascends at a 7% grade for one half mile to the top of the ridge. The road across the ridge is scenic, rolling and is composed mainly of wonderfully reclaimed strip mile lands. At the ten mile mark beyond the start, the racers will encounter a junction of two roads (elevation 1250). This constitutes the beginning of the Providence Loop. This area is affectionately known to area cyclists as "the radio tower" (37 04.018 by 84 22.536) as will be evident when you cross over the area.

The junction of the roads at the radio tower is the beginning of the Providence Loop portion of the Race Course. This is an eleven mile loop with 1,110 feet of vertical climbing and descending. There is a one mile length climb on Providence Road that has an average grade of 7% but reaches a maxium grade of 12%.

If you would like to plot the loop on your GIS software, here are the turns for the Providence Loop:

Radio Tower (co-ords given above)
right turn on Kentucky Highway 192 (37 01.878 by 84 23.168) This is Mt. Victory
right turn on Providence Road (37 01.878 by 84 25.495)
right turn on hw 1003 (37 04.523 by 84 23.490)
then back to the "radio tower"

Based on your category, you will complete the Providence loop one, two or three times before turning back across the ridge at "the radio tower" to complete the final ten miles of the race.

With the exception of the few up rolling hills, the final ten miles of the course will be "down hill" descending from 1,300' to 800'.  It will be a fast finish.

Since this course weaves inand out of the Daniel Boone National Forest (no leash laws), there may be some problems with loose dogs. Please be aware of that.

Summary
The course is composed of a 10 mile segment out to an 11 mile circut.  Thus, the minimum distance will be 10+11+10= 31 miles.

Each aditional Providence loop will at 11 miles. 42, 53, 64, ect.

Crew News

http://www.cumberlandcycles.com/index.html

Hello Crew!

I am very happy to announce, I'm home. Having arrived back in Somerset last Thursday night (late) I was able to participate in Saturdays and Sundays Team rides!!!  So, I'm gone for just a few weeks, and everybody gets strong as heck!!!  Wow!!

Roger, JT, Adam, Charles and Nick rode the Spring Series Race Course last Saturday and it turned out to be a real slug fest. Nick, having spent most of his fall in India (without his bike), was the only member of the ride to ride conservatively.  It was great having Nick along, because everybody else did not ride conservatively (and he's a really nice fellow). Once the group had completed the Providence Loop and headed back to Stab, the ride opened up into a real turkey shoot. Roger, Charles, Adam and JT took the stretch from Adams Grocery back to the Stab Fire House in an end-game race simulation.

Somehow, coming out of Adams Grocery, Adam and Roger ended up with a small gap over Charles and JT.  Roger was pulling Adam and Charles and JT worked together to close off their gap.  By the time Charles and JT had closed Adam and Roger off, Adam was the only one of the four who had not "worked" so it was a great opportunity for him to attack.  Thankfully, Adam is to kind of a soul to do that to everybody, so we all got to rest for a few seconds. Then Charles Attacked and Adam and JT went with him. Roger, having just worked for several minutes in an enormous effort pulling Adam down the road in a headwind, was vulnerable and was not able to go. Adam, Charles and JT jabbed at each other for the last three miles with JT riding the most conservatively. When the trio reached the final 400 meters, Adam and Charles were overworked and JT took the sprint.

SUNDAYS ride from Nancy to Cumberland Point saw JT, Adam, Charles, Brad and Aaron jabbing and jockeying in a very niceteam ride.

Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series Race Update
Mr. Brad Herrman, our club president, spent last Saturday in Louisville at a promoters meeting for the series. He came away from that meeting with some great information, and good sense for what our March 22 leg of that event will be like. It seems likely that our event in Shopville will be a well attended event and we are very excited about being a part of this highly acclaimed series!  Thanks to Brad for all of his hard work this winter making sure that everything isready to go.

Brad still needs sponsors and volunteers so be sure to contact him if you can help out in any way!  Remember, we will have several power-house teams showing up for this event, and individual riders will include several national champions and other highly accomplished racers!  Brad may be reached at flyingchicken55@yahoo.com.

Here is the series web site:
Kentucky/Indiana Spring Racing Series

We will be developing a race flyer soon, but if you'd like to preview the race course, here is a brief description.

The staging area is at the Shopvile Volunteer Fire Station (Sam Catron Memorial). The race will leave the firehouse area, proceeding east to Adams Grocery. The course turns right on 1675.  The race proceeds across the ridge to Mt. Victory and turns right on highway 192.  The course descends to Providence Road then Turns right.  Follow Providence Road to highway 1003 then turn right again. The course then comes back to highway 1675.  This completes the eleven mile, Providence Loop of the race course. Based on race categories, the various fields will complete this loop, one, two or three times before turning  back to Stab. It is a grueling course with 1,500 feet of climbing on each loop of the course.

Cumberland Cycles Cycling Club will conduct a time trial series in 2008 at Barnsburg, and this is open to anybody who would like to post a time. From February until October, the club will conduct one event every month.... The first event will be held Sunday, February 10 at 2 PM.

Our Cycling Club and Team
The Cumberland Cycles Cycling Club is a full USA Cycling affiliate, interested in promoting cycling of any kind in our community. Our Nuclear Sponsor is The Cumberland Cycles Bike and Skate Shop.  Even though we are just entering the winter season, we have many cyclists who will remain active for the remainder of the year and season. When spring, 2008 comes, our club will become more active in promoting sport and recreational cycling events and activities.

Our officers are:

       Mr. Brad Herrman, President (flyingchicken55@yahoo.com)
Mr. Charles Senters, V. President (zapodx@newwavecomm.net)
       Mr. Jack Evans, Treasurer (jevans@ehacpas.com)

The Cumberland Cycles Racing Team is sub-unit of the over all club. The only requirement to become a member of the racing team is a desire to ride a bicycle in a completive manner in 2008.  This may include road cycling races, track events, mountain bike races, and multisport events. An individual completive event will include any start (regardless of finish/or non-finish) by any individual in any road, track or multisport event wearing the Cumberland Cycles 2008 Team Uniform.

A Year Ago - get ready for a new photo session

Be sure to thank these pioneers!!!!

wayfairing stranger -

I honestly can not wait to get home.... I've been gone for a month; and while the holidays have been the best I think i've ever had, they've also had the element of difficult.

I miss my friends... my family and I miss my cats. Hell, I even miss Harvey.
