Recent Rider Upgrade
We want to congratulate Mr. Adam Bourne for his outstanding 2007 racing year. Adam participated in 15 mass start, sanctioned CAT V races and did very well. Despite some errors in the promoters results, Adam won first place in a large CAT V road race and placed very well in all of the rest. As a result, his recent request for upgrade from CAT V to CAT IV with USA Cycling was a success. Adam is now a Category IV racer, and has had his national standing wiped clean. He will now be able to decide to compete in cat 4/5 events, or race in cat 3/4 events.  His upgrade will also allow him to participate in the TBRA Masters events which are numerous and prestigious.  With a few well placed races, Adam will be able to upgrade to a CAT III which will qualify him for the National Championship Events.

RACING CLUB POINTS
Just for the fun of it, we keep up with club points as we have been for a year now. As a team, and at the moment, we are in the fall and winter training points competition 07/08. This club points race began in early October, and will continue until the first of February, 2008. The team is awarding points for anybody who shows up to train with team.  If the ride participants agree, then the group will race to the ride finish in pursuit of higher points. A contested ride winner will win one point for every person who showed up for the ride. The payout then cascades down to 1 point for the last person finishing.

The winner of this years training points race will receive a basic, 2008 Cumberland Cycles Race Team Uniform, compliments of the team!

On the first of February, the crew will begin the 2008 Racing Season Points Series. Those payout's will be announced over the winter. The winner of the 2008 club points race will have their name and logo placed on the 2009 Cumberland Cycles Team Uniform.

Our club 2007 club racing points winner last year was Mr. Aaron Denney, and he was rewarded by having his company name and logo placed on our 2008 team uniform.

Club points are awarded for USCF Road Cyclists and Multi-sport athletes. The team points system is gender and age compensated.

Cumberland Cycles Road Racing Crew held their second annual Fall Training Road Race today, and the results are in!  In fact, I will "call" the race here and now!  It was outstanding.

First of all, let me thank Mr. Robert Brooks (Bob), a Masters National Bracket CAT II Racer from Indianapolis, for joining us today. Bob is an official USA Cycling Coach, and is Aaron Denney's coach and JT's long time friend and confident. Bob races for the Indiana Hand Center Team based out of Indianapolis and is a cycling trainer.

The day started out with a ride with JT, Bob, Jack Evans and Jenny Denney riding the Cannonball Loop from the Stab Fire house. After those 20 miles, the actual fall training race got under way with the following participants:

JT, Bob Brooks, Jack Evans, Aaron Denney, Roger Whitlock, Chuck Senters and Charlie Bailey (female).

The training race followed the exact proposed KYIN Spring Points race course.

Everything stayed fairly well intact all the way to Adams Grocery, but up the climb from Adams, JT, Jack, Bob and Aaron broke clear, leaving Roger, Charlie, and Charles separated.  Over 1675 to the Radio Tower, Bob attacked and got a sizable gap but had to wait on Aaron, JT and Jack because he did not know the course. Between the radio tower and Mt. Victory store, JT launched an attack and left Jack and Aaron stranded off the back.  Jack wisely chose to force Aaron to neutralize the attack.  Aaron pulled Jack back to Bob and JT but once there, Jack correctly realized that everybody but him had been working hard.... (JT attacked, Bob went with him, and Aaron pulled Jack back up).  It was reasonable for Jack to attack at this point, and he did... and in so doing, Jack isolated Aaron for good.

From MT. Victory, it was Jack, JT and Bob. We headed down the steep decent to Providence Road and during the course, Jack mentioned not being able to climb Providence and he figured that he'd get dropped.  But as fate would have it, Bob attacked and JT cramped up, and only Jack was able to  go with Bob. Bob climbed up the hill fastest, but, looking back, he saw that Jack had a gap on JT and he allowed Jack to come up. With Jack and Bob working together, JT was unable to bridge up.  After three or four miles, JT had to concede and looked back to see who might be coming for aid. Three or four miles later, JT spotted somebody coming up and he assumed it was Aaron.  But when the rider came by, it was Roger. JT Tried to stay on Rogers wheel, or even help him neutralize Jack and Bob, but he was ineffective. Roger quickly dropped JT and went on to finish the race in third place.  JT (me) finished 4th, Charles Senters finished 5, Aaron 6 and Charlie Bailey 7th.

This race was an outstanding effort by Jack Evans and Roger Whitlock.

In the final sprint, Bob was able to launch and beat Jack in the sprint.

Here are the results:
1 - male - Bob Brooks
1 - female - Charlie Bailey
2  - male - Jack Evans
3 - male - Roger Whitlock
4 - male - JT
5 - male - Chuck Senters
6 - male - Aaron Denney

The third annual fall training race will be next November!!!!!  Be sure to put it on your calendar.

Thanksgiving

FEATURED SPONSOR
Sinking Valley Vineyard and Winery

Happy Thanksgiving!   I don't think we are ridding much these days... at least I know that my miles are down.  It is Thanksgiving!  I hope everybody has had a wonderful day - ready to burn some calories in the next few weeks!

I would like to take a moment, wax poetical - mention what I am thankful for today.

It has been a very dynamic year for me.  Many things have happened and changed.  I am grateful for these changes.  But first of all, I am always most grateful for the health and good well being of my son, Jon Boy. He is well these days, and for that I am grateful. He will be marching in a Drum and Bugle Core next summer; reaching and attaining his drumming dreams.

I am thankful for all of the absolutely wonderful friends I have made this year and all of the new people I have met this year through cycling. I have many new and very dear friends. I am sometimes astonished at how wonderful our athletic and cycling community is here in Somerset. I think we are all blessed by each other. I know that I am blessed by each and everyone of you; whether you and I have driven to races together, raced in races together, ridden together, or have simply seen each other on our bikes.... Thank you all for giving me such a wonderful first year back on my bike.

Over the past year I also was reacquainted with a very old sweat heart and I am very grateful to have Debbie and her kids in my life. They are so wonderful to me.

I am thankful to God for my health and I am grateful to Him for my ability to reach a higher level of fitness.

I am grateful to my dad who has helped me so much over the past year, getting back into road racing.

I am grateful for Marc Travis and Cumberland Cycles who allowed me to high jack their bike club without too much difficulty!!!!

I am grateful that Thanksgiving is now almost over and it is officially time to start training for next year!!!!!!

Crew News- Fall Training Race

Hello Crew!

Happy Holidays everybody!  With the Thanksgiving week coming up, I didn't figure it was too early to wish it.

I do love this time of year.  Today's (Sunday) team ride was just magnificent (at least to me).  I just love this time of year - warm, sunny days after the leaves have peaked, and most of them are coming down.  There is such an air of thanksgiving in these times. Thanksgiving for my very good, and respectable friends - all riding through our beautiful woods and county roads. To see everybody with such conditioning; well, it is simply heartwarming.

Mr. Aaron Denney hosted a northern Pulaski County ride last Saturday in which Adam and Jack joined Aaron for what I heard was a fantastically beautiful ride. Sundays ride saw Adam, Jack, Dr. Mark, Dr. Harvey, L'Pres Brad, and JT leave the Vision Center and head east on 192 ten miles out to Providence Road.  We then Road the proposed spring race course... Up Providence to 1003, to 192 to Mt. Victory and back to the vision center on 192. The group was cohesive, and everybody is getting so strong. L'Pres Brad Herrman is becoming a very powerful rider and I think that he is going to really do well this spring as a CAT V. We will see Brad ranked this spring. The biggest change in Brads riding has been his ability to stay forward and recover very quickly after burst of intense efforts by the group. Adam continues to be very strong, and he commented today that his legs are coming back to life after some time off. He exploded up some of the hillsin manner reminiscent of his summer riding style.  It is my understanding that Adam (who is eligible) will be upgrading from CAT V to CAT IV before the racing season starts. We will see Adam get himself ranked as a CAT IV this year just like he did as a V last year. Jack continues to pound the pavement, and he is becoming a force to recon with on the hills. He told me last month that he is going to focus on time trials and hills as he saw these as the areas that he could improve among his Masters field. Jack is also eligible for upgrade from a V to a IV and it is my hope that he upgrades soon. Mr. Aaron Denney is currently Ranked #1 in the USA CAT V Crit rider in is age group.  While Aaron is eligible for upgrade to CAT IV, I think that he plans to remain a V until he gets some more race wins under his belt. Roger Whitlock is our time trial specialist, and Ithink he plans to remain a CAT V for the 2008 Season. Expect Roger to become nationally ranked in the time trial discipline next year!  Charles Senters will race in 2008 as a CAT V and if he continues to perform as he has been the last few weeks, he will also become ranked nationally. As for me, JT, I will remain a CAT III as my recent request to upgrade to CAT II was declined.

We have several other folks to plan to road race next year who will enter the field as CAT V's.  These hopefuls are Dr. Mark Henry, Dr. Harvey Scheleter, DR Swanner, Dave Stewart, Dave Zwick, Jeff Parmely, Jay Garman, Kerry Fain, Jenny Denney, Charlie Bailey (currently ranked), Nick Cabrini and several others.

Jeff Ekoniak, who raced as a Day-of-CAT V this past year, did extremely well in his events.  If he decides to race again next year, he will enter the season as a V and so, if he can find the time to race a couple time a month, look for Jeff to become nationally ranked very quickly. Even though Jeff's actual road event experience places him as a CAT V competitor, he has placed well and will continue to place well in with CAT I, II's and Professionals Masters fields. Jeff certainly does not belong in the V field, but because of the USA Cycling Regs, that is where he must begin the 2008 season. We just have to find a way to get him to race most often. Maybe we could volunteer to help him at his company!

Hello Crew!

Well, we've had some excellent training rides lately!  Mr. Charles Senters has been relentless in his pursuit of late-game gappage, and continues to be successful in breaking away and staying away form our training groups lately. Charles has been riding bikes for many years; Road and mountain. So he has this uncanny ability to attack when you least expect it.  Sometimes he attacks us on the open road, but our strong road riders can quickly neutralize him there.  So at other times, he attacks around a gravely corner.  If that is not successful, he will attack at the top of a dangerous and extremely fast decent... and this is where Charles usually gets his gap!  Not many of the rest of us are brave enough to decent behind him.... The exceptions are Jack Evans and Brad Herrman. When these three riders get serious about going down hill, you might as well sit up and have a drink of water... because they are G.O.N.E.!

Last Saturdays ride consisted of a test ride of the proposed Spring Training Race. Even though it was a cool day, we had a nice turnout. Roger, Jack, Brad Herrman and Charles were very active and strong. We were very pleased to have Mr. Dave Chaney, from Everybody's Bike Coach Team (Everybody's Bike Coach - A Professional Online Training Program ) join us.  It was nice having Dave with us as he kept the pace lively.

Charles, Roger, Jack, Brad Herrman and several others have been very energetic lately and it is really great to see so much good conditioning in our crew at this time of the year.

Crew News

Hello Crew!

PLEASE JOIN THE CUMBERLAND CYCLES NEWS GROUP!

Cumberland Cycling Club | Google Groups

Well, we've had some very nice, scenic rides in the last couple of weeks!  Having run out of daylight, the Barnsburg mid-week rides have quietly slipped into hibernation. But weekend mountain bike rides and road rides have been excellent!  Several of our MTB riders have participated in some great rides recently!  The Cumberland Cycles Club MTB rides have been very well populated and we've had some great activity from the Somerset Community College (KCTCS) crew as well. Cumberland Cycles MTBr's have been going down in to the Big South Fork for some unbelievably scenic rides and they've been riding at Pulaski Park as well. Our KCTCS folks (also claimed by Cumberland Cycles) get around the state a bit I think, and ride in diverse and unique places as well. Our college campus MTB crew recently provided some cycling information for a really nice article in the campus newspaper!

Our road riders/racers have been taking some time off but have been riding some as well. We have several riders who are slated to do extremely well on the national amateur or masters circuits next year. Our sponsors are now all in, and the 2008 Cumberland Cycles Racing Team Uniforms will be ordered in the next couple of days. More on this later, but these uniforms are not for our racers alone!  We hope to outfit every cyclist in the area with our new uniforms!  We will have standard jerseys and shorts, bibs, skin suits and tri suits available as well as sleeveless outfits!

Our multi-sport athletes have been pouring it on strong in our team rides.  I sure would love to convert a few of these fellows over to our road team!  Even though they are concentrating on running events in the late fall and winter, they still come out to perform very strongly on our team rides!

Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series
We are scheduled to host a Kentucky/Indiana Spring Points Series Event on March  22, 2008, and we are very proud of this honor. We want to thank Brad Herrman for all of his work getting this event scheduled for our area. WE NEED INPUT FROM THE CLUB AND TEAM!  We are looking for courses and races names. If you have anyideas for a course and a race name, please forward it to us. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ON THE RACE TEAM TO PUT IN IDEAS!!!!  We want this to be a great event, and we expect this to be an annual event for the next several years, so we want to come up with a great course and a great name. All of our racers will be participating in the event, so we really need out MTBr's and our club riders to volunteer for Marshalling duties. Your help would be greatly appreciated. This event and this entire series will be attend by several national champions, worlds mentalists, Olympic hopefuls, and MOST OF THE BEST CYCLING TEAMS IN THE MIDWEST. It will not be an extremely large event, with all of the hubub of a typical summer race, but it will be an important event to the people racing.

Shop News
I rode today, and even though it was 45 degrees, I swore it was more like 12. I kept remembering last winter; how we trained all winter long and how I doubted I could weather the weather again... The trick is getting out in the cold weather as it comes.  By the time it goes from a 45 degrees in November to 25 degrees in January, we will all be used to it. And Cumberland Cycles is here to help!  Cycling and training through the winter will not be a problem, so long as we continue to get out and ride in the cooler weather.  As the weather gets worse, we will get tougher, so long as we continue to get out in it!  Marc, down at the shop, has the shelves filled with winter gear.... anything and everything we need to continue training through the cold weather.

New Internet Site
Brad Herrman and Charles (Chuck) Senters have been busy building a web page for our club and team. The quality of this work is far, far better than my Blog. Please make this site a regular Internet stop while you are surfing!  Please note that our club and race team weekly information, ride and race schedules will be posted here!

Nova - 08

our sponsors:   www.cumberlandcyclingclub.org - Cumberland Cycling Clubs

A total of nine club mates met at the Shopeville Library last Sunday and rode in the glorious sun and October blue and forest colors to Otts Store just outside London.  It was an excellent ride; scenic and refreshing!  Charles and Roger kept the pace a little warm with the rest of us happy to bask in the wheels. Once to the hill on the east side of the Rockastle River, Jeff P. cut loose and climbed the hill as if it wasn't even there!  It was a beautiful ride and I am extremely encouraged at this level of turn-out for our fall team rides.
