Multisport News

We have several fantastic multisport athletes who will be racing for Cumberland Cycles this year. These fellows and gals are tough as nails and we are proud to have each and every one of them. Mr. Dave Zwick will be the club statistician for this group and will report activities to the shop and club so we may post their results here.

I am especially proud to announce that Mr. David Altmaier, son of Carrie and Chris Altmaier, will be slicking himself out in our new uniform and will race remotely for our team in Florida. Dave is my nephew, and he is a fine athlete. He is also a fine fisherman, but I hope some day to have him join his uncle in pure road cycling!

2008 Multisport Events are coming in as well:   http://www.trifind.com/ky.html

The Official 2008 Season Opener

The Official Season Opener for our team will be March 1, Team Louisville - L Esprit Road Race. This is event #1 of the Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series.

Last year, it was cold and snowy, but who knows what this year will bring.

You have about seven weeks to get ready for this race, and I am sure, with the conditioning we all have from last year, we will all be ready!!

Crew News

Hello Crew,

Cumberland cycles blog:
http://journals.aol.com/moonsovrbend/cumberland-cycles-crew-racing-te/

Things are heating up as I figured they would after Christmas. Brad Herrman and JT will be attending a KYIN Race Series organizational meeting in Louisville on January 5. I am looking forward to this meeting as I am sure it will be informative and will help put Mr. Herrman's mind at ease about this tiger he feels he has by the trail!

For more information regarding the spring series, please consider joining the promoters discussion group for the series.

Race schedules are rolling in by the day and it is time for all of us to get on our bikes!!!!  I will be back home in the next few days and I plan to hit the road pretty hard for the next six weeks.

As the Cumberland Cycles Team Captain, I must, at this time, implore our road cycling team to adopt a basic regiment. Bearing in mind that I am not a sanctioned coach, let me offer the follow, basic workout plan.

MONDAY - REST
TUESDAY - SHORT INTENSE SPRINT INTERVALS
WEDNESDAY - LONG ROAD MILES
THURSDAY - LONG INTENSE SPRINTS - TIME TRIAL OR BRIDGING EFFORT INTERVALS
FRIDAY - REST
SATURDAY - LONG RACE SIMULATION
SUNDAY - LONG RACE SIMULATION

For much more detailed training, we recommend that you hire a personal cycling coach. We have two sanctioned coaches available for hire. Mr. Bob Brooks from Indianapolis, Indiana is already working with a few of our team mates. Bob is along time friend of JT and Walter Thompson.

We also have Mr. Dave Grigsby with the London Bike Shop who is an excellent cycling coach.

CONTACT JT FOR CONTACT INFORMATION FOR BOB OR DAVE.

The 2008 Cumberland Cycles Uniforms will be available in the next couple of weeks. Immediately after we receive those uniforms, we MUST SCHEDUAL A TEAM PHOTO SESSION. Please stay tuned and ready to leap when those uniforms come in so we can get our promotional photographs taken!

Happy New Year Everybody!!!!!  2008 is going to be a great year for our club, our team and our shop!

Crew News December 27, 2007

http://www.cumberlandcycles.com/index.html

Hello Crew!!

I left Denver yesterday and I arrived back in Indianapolis last night. I will remain here in Indy visiting my Son until the 7th of January. I will also get to ride and train with our team and club friend, Bob Brooks.

My trip to Colorado was simply magnificent. It was one of the best Holiday Seasons I've ever had. Deb and her family opened their home to me for Christmas and it was a wonderful time. The weather while I was in Colorado Springs did not co-operate very well and it was icy and snowy much of the time. Deb and I did get to ride nearly one hundred miles though.  And that was good as usual. Besides riding a little bit, we did some hiking in the Rockies. Wow. We drove over to Cripple Creek one day to visit an old gold mining town. We cooked a Christmas turkey and spent a lot of time with Deb's wonderful kids.

Even though I did not train as much as I had hoped, I spent three weeks above 6,500 feet elevation and ventured as high as 10,500. Back here in Indiana at an elevation of 700 feet, my body feels strong!

NEW BUSINESS

RACES
Several 2008 bike races have been published!  There will be many more, but here are some of the early listings to get you motivated to train!!!

There will be many many more races added to the public domain as the year progresses.

This is and has been for many years, the USA Cycling Olympic Sanctioning body. It is important for anybody who is going to race with us next year to purchase a license.

I flew without incident back to Indy and that is where I am now.  I will stay here ten days with my son and then I will come back to Somerset just in time to recieve our new team uniforms!!!  I will have been gone a month and I am so much looking forward to seeing everybody and getting on with my training!!!

Merry Christmas from Colorado

Merry Christmas from Colorado!!!  Be sure to notice the high mountians in the far background!

Hello Crew!

Be sure to link to our blog to see a recent photograph of me here in Colorado... (so as to assure my fellow team mates, I am, in fact, still alive).
Cumberland Cycles Crew Club Blog

I am still in Colorado, and I passed a very comfortable 45th birthday yesterday with my sweetheart, Deb and her kids. Deb and I drove out and around Pikes Peak to a little town called Cripple Creek and had lunch.  Deb treated me to a day driving out into visual range of the central rockies.... Just as I had asked!  Once home, Deb and her kids cooked a birthday dinner and a birthday cake for me!!!  Wow.

When I leave Colorado on the 26th of December, I will fly back to Indianapolis and I will go with my Son to his Drum and Bugle Core event in Wisconsin. I will be back in Somerset on or about January 6th or 7th and I will be very eager to see everybody.

TENNESSEE has published some 2008 races!!!!  Please focus your attention here:

Tennessee Races - 2008

Here is where Deb and I ride:  Garden of the Gods Ten Mile Run [Home]  It is less than 3 miles from her house.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!

From Colorado Springs

Hello Crew!

FEATURED SPONSOR
Lifescan Imaging

HOLIDAY GREETINGS FROM COLORADO!!!!  My first week in Colorado Springs has been just wonderful. Deb and her kids and I went out last Saturday in Pikes Peak National Forest and harvested a Christmas Tree and it was snowing but good!  What a wonderful Christmas event for me. Not only has it been many years since I had a white Christmas, but I have never been in the December Colorado High Country, Christmas Tree Hunting!  Simply wonderful time.

In so far as the town life this past week, Colo Springs has been buried under a blanket of snow and what I find very strange, they DO NOT SALT THE ROADS HERE!  So I have been learning to drive on ice and snow covered roads.  And these people come and go as if it were nothing...  It is very unnerving.

Due to the snow and ice, I have not been on the road on my bike in over a week.  I have been on Deb's trainer but precious little. As I understand it, the Somerset area has been having record highs!!!  A total contrast to my recent environs. I hope everyone there is getting in some quality miles!  Because I am not!  It worries me a little, but not all that bad.

UNIFORM UPDATE
The 2008 team uniforms were ordered today. If you did not pre-order a uniform, don't worry. Cumberland Cycles will carry some on the racks and we can also make other orders. The final proof is attached if you missed it last time.

2008 TEAM/CLUB PHOTOGRAPH
Once we are in receipt of our 2008 Uniforms, we will be calling for an "all hands" team and club photograph. We will do this sometime in the later two weeks of January or early February. We want to have anybody and everybody show up and be a part of the Cumberland Cycles Class of 2008 area cycling club photograph.  If you did not pre-order a 2008 Uniform, please show up with our former jersey. The more folks we have show up, the better. Please make it a point to come out and get into the photo. The more the better. We will announce the date and time later on.

TRAINING
The Total Rehab Spin-a-thon will continue this Thursday night at Total Rehab.   The Total Rehab Center.   We will meet at 8:30 PM and train for one hour. The team has provided an extra trainer for anybody who would like to show up and train, but doesn't have a trainer.  Please bring your bike, a towel and your water bottles.

I think some of the Mt. Bikers have been going down to Bandy Creek every Saturday. They are planning to go again this Saturday. Please contact Marc, at the shop for more details.

Since I am not in town, I do not know what is going on for Saturday and Sunday, but please call around for more information as I am sure there will be rides.

WAXING POETICAL
I am well here in Colorado. I miss everybody - my training routes and my Pal's.  But I am well - waking up each morning to my loved one and her two wonderful kids. It is truly a winter wonderland here, and when we open the house in the morning, in the smell of brewing coffee, the Rocky Mountains are ablaze out the front window.  Deb's house is at over 6,000 feet in elevation and we have been hiking some as well. Those adventures are at or above 9,500 feet so my body is being trained even though I am not riding much. When I get on the trainer in Deb's basement, I am doing so at an elevation of over 6,000 feet!

I have had some time to reflect on our first year together as a club and team. I am so happy about what we've been able to accomplish. Both from our racers as well as our club riders, multi-sport athletes and organizationally to  Charles Senters, Brad Herrman and Jack Evans have been very effective in getting our club and team organized.  Marc Travis has been an invaluable title sponsor - putting together our uniform for 2008, getting the club sanctioned with USA Cycling and a great many other things.

We have a CAT V racer who is ranked #1 in the Nation, and we have several other riders ranked #1 in the State of Kentucky. We won silver and gold metals in the 07 Kentucky State Cycling Championships, and we have a masters 50+ individual racing with and beating folks who placed in the World championships and we have held our ground against several national champions and former Olympic Medallists.

And this doesn't even include the great works of our multisport's who also had great success in 2007.

I am so proud of what we are doing in Somerset.

Happy Holidays everybody!!!!!!

Please be sure to keep us notified of your starts and finishes in any event!  We are interested in your results and we want to keep track of you so we can brag on and reward our outstanding athletes.  We want to always recognize everybody's efforts in competition regardless of results.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Our mountain biking community is very active and they seem to be having a lot of fun!  These fellow and gals travel hither and fro biking our marvelous woodland trails. Some of them are even biking at night out at Laurel Lake with head lights. These folks might not digest open, smooth, asphalted road as fast as some of our road bikers, but get on the trail with even the least of them will be the best you ever saw!

We are gifted to have many accomplished MT Bikers in our club, but I heard something recently that really caught my attention. Mr. Dale Coffee, a dentist in Somerset, spends his summers water skiing.  After a season of water, Dale keeps himself fit and busy mountain biking and apparently, he keeps the Buffalo Loop down at Natural Arch open and ready for bikers.

These folks have been trying to get me out on a MT bike ride for a long time now.  Kevin Aker, Brad Hewlett, Marc Travis, Brad Herrman, Charles Senters, Trent Pool and many others - all hard core mountain bikers have come out and gotten involved with our road activities... Us road bikers ought to be so brave.

JT PHYSICAL ABSENTS
I will be leaving Somerset on Thursday, December 6 and will not return for four weeks.  I will Blog from time to time, but please rely upon each other for ride notifications just in case I don't get the chance to post information.

Happy Holidays everybody!!!!!!
