news

Hello Crew,

Marc Travis, at the bike shop, continues to be incredibly busy. Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Barnesburg Church - we are filling the parking lot with riders both team and club.  Mr. Brad Hewlett has continued to be a tireless advocate of sport and club bike riding in our area.   As of today, the Cumberland Cycles Team and Club as put 140 riders in 600 points baring events!  This is not even including Bard Hewlett's biweekly rides. We have a total of 47 cyclists who have scored in our club's 2009 points race. We have had a great year. I will collect national standings on our core racing team sometime in mid September and publish them to the club.   But I can tell you, the impact we have had as a team and club and shop has been extremely dynamic in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana this year.

The Team has four races left.  We will be scattered between Indy and Chattanooga this weekend, but we will hold our August Barnesburg Time Trial Event on Sunday, August 31 - we hope to have everybody out to post a time..... racers and non-racers!!!!!

Focus Event for Cumberland Cycles - Tour De London - Kentucky State Road and Crit Championships -
regester here:  www.Turesport.com
While we have had riders participate in the National Championships this year, as well as national calendar events.  We are now focused on our final event; the Kentucky State Road and Criterium Championships, which will be held in London, Kentucky on September 6th and 7th. This race is the bitter or delicious end to a grueling racing season for many of our riders.  We, as a club and a team and a shop, invite you to get involved in this race. Come out and feed/water our road racers.... or come on Sunday to watch the dynamic and exciting Criterium in Down Town London..

A Cumberland Cycles Club/Community Ride - IMPORTANT
Shortly after the Kentucky State Championships, I think it would be a good idea to integrate the club and team for some nice rides this fall. Our racers have nothing to train for and it would be a great opportunity for our two groups to get to know each other - these rides would be not contested... I would hope for a lot of chatting in the peleton..... In my two years back in cycling, I have not year ridden a mile with our Core Sponsor, Marc Travis.... I would love to have some saddle time with Marc - in the mist of a beautiful fall. In fact, I would love to ride a long ride with everybody in our community who loves to ride a bike. We will arrange it. Expect me to be at the rear, coming up with the slowest.  Fall is the best time to take your time and observes nature - and be with other cyclists.

Please watch for an event we will sponsor this fall.... and please come out to ride with me, and your team, and your club and your shop and your sponsors.

After Tour De London
My Dad and I plan to go trout fishing.... I plan to dig ginseng... I plan to hike some of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail and I plan - I plan to do anything but train in cycling. I need to take it easy for a while... read some books... what ever.

Most of the fields were "loaded for bear" with the masters 30+ race fielding several current or former national champions. It was a great day, and it was assume to see so many Cumberland Cycles Team Members and Club Members at the race!!

We want to congratulate Mr. David Ponder for completing his first non-mountain bike mass start event.  We also want to congratulate Mr. Jay Garmen for being upgraded to a category 4 racer and participating in his first 3/4 event today.

We also want to congratulate Dr. Mark Henry, our clubs currently top ranked multisport athlete,  for a good start and performance in this non-multisport event!

The next three weeks are going to busy for our road crew (hang on just a little longer, I keep telling myself. We have BMW in Chattanooga,  August 23 and 24.  We also have the Indiana Stage Race, August 23 and 24.  We will run the August Barnesburg Time Trial Event on Sunday, August 31, and we have the Kentucky State Road Race and Criterium Championships on September 6 and 7 in London, Kentucky.

We also have all of our multisport athletes racing several times this fall.

Wow!
I don't know about you, but I am a little tired!  As a club, to date, we have put 582 riders in 138 points bearing events!!!!  Hats off to everybody who has scored in our Club Points Race!!!!!  (Jack Evans currently in a seemingly unbeatable lead)

We have had a great second year.  Thanks to Marc Travis's work on our team uniforms, and all of our sponsors, we have looked great. Not only have we been noticed as a team, we have gained a great deal of respect.  Due to the hard work of our club officers, Brad Herrman, Charles Senters and Jack Evans, we have become a cycling club and team that is known beyond our state boundaries.

BUT (!) I am hoping to collect two or three medals at our Kentucky State Championships, in London, September 6+7. We are not done yet.

Beyond that, I am personally looking forward to trout fishing and gensing hunting. I am looking forward to some time off from the bike. I am looking forward to the fall and winter. I am looking forward to starting a new foundation period with a team and club and shop that I have some to love a great deal..... Cumberland Cycles!

I am very happy to announce that our core 2009 Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series Team will get to have

I am very happy to announce that our core 2009 Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series Team will get to have two test events in 2008!!!  These include the Richmond and Frankfort pop-up Criterium in August and September.

Let me wax some poetical as well explain some team and personal history - so you can see how this is coming together.

I began riding again exactly 2 years ago.  I started racing again 18 months ago in the Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series. I worked closely with Marc Travis and Cumberland Cycles to develop a road racing team and, well I think everybody is well aware that we have had some success. BUT, now, after the 2008 racing season, we have 8 riders eligible for upgrades which means be may begin the 2009 Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series at a fairly dynamic team!!!!  For the first time, we will be able to field 8 team members in the same race for an eight week racing series next spring!!!!

Here is your 3/4 team as it is shaping up

Jonathon Thompson
Jack Evans
Adam Bourne
Aaron Denney
Jay Garman
Brad Herrman
Charles Senters
Roger Whitlock

The exciting news is that we will be able to take the bulk of this team out for two test races this fall... at Richmond and Frankfort, Kentucky!!!!!  So far we can field the following riders in the same race:

Jonathon Thompson
Jack Evans
Adam Bourne
Aaron Denney
Jay Garman (pending upgrade request)
Brad Herrman (pending upgrade request)
Charles Senters (pending upgrade request)
Roger Whitlock (pending upgrade request)

I am fully expecting to field a five man team in Richmond and Frankfort this fall and as many as 8 nextspring.

Please come out and watch the racing this Saturday in Richmond - Men's Health Awareness Criterium

2009 CAT 3/4 Team shaping up

Even though we have all been racing basically alone in our various categories for the last two years, 2009 seems to be the year we can field a significant 3/4 field for the 2009 Spring Kentucky/Indiana Spring Racing Series in the CAT 3/4 Racing..   This will start on or about March 1, 2009.  If your name appears below, please consider spending the fall and winter months with the team as we might pull off a good result for the 2009 spring series.

Jonathon Thompson is a CAT 3

Adam Bourne is a CAT 4 and may upgrade to CAT 3 Later this year - even as a  4, he can start the 2009 series in the 3/4 division

Jack Evans is a CAT 4 but is eligible to upgrade to CAT 3.  Upgrade or not, we will ask Jack to begin to the 2009 Spring Training Series in the 3/4 Category

Jay Garman is a CAT V rider, but he is qualified to upgrade to CAT 4. As a racing team, we are asking him to upgrade. When and if he does, we will field him in the 3/4 2009 Spring Series

Brad Herrman is a Cat V rider who has more than qualified for an upgrade to Cat 4.  This would make him eligible to begin the 2009 Spring Series in the 3/4 field with the rest of the team.

Aaron Denney is already a Cat 4 Rider but I think he plans to upgrade to CAT 3 as soon as he can... Aaron will populate the spring series 3/4 race series whether he upgrades or not.

Charles Senters has enough racing expertise to Cat up to a 4 and join all of us in the 3/4 2009 KY/IN spring contest. Charles will be a great asset.

Kentucky/Indiana Spring Series Team (3/4) Roster
Jonathon Thomson
Jack Evans
Adam Bourne
Aaron Denney
Jay Garman
Charles Senters
Brad Hermman

We also have several riders who will begin the 2009 Series at Cat 5.

This is a team.  We could possible put a rider up in the top five if not actually  win the series. Please begin to think about this now, going in to your  fall and winter training programs.  .

Points Closings

We will not close our points scoring until November 1 as our multisport athletes will compete a bit longer than our road folks.

We will ratify our points winner on November 1, 2008.

End of Summer Update

I don't think it is to anybody's surprise that this has been an extremely busy and stressful summer for me.  I put my Son into his new school this morning, and I drove home to Somerset. Of all of the things I could feel, I simply feel tired. I feel like resting for a week!  Trip to Colorado; took my Son to Utah and left him there for nine weeks to wonder around the desert... went back to Utah to see him  in July... now he's back and I took him to his new school this morning up in Indy.... National Championships.... all of the racing... traveling. It's a lot for a simple person like me. If you come by my house and I have a "do not disturb" sign up on my door, you'll know why. I need rest. I do want to thank very body for your prayers and well wishes concerning my Son.  I am happy to report, he is doing well at the moment. I am hopeful.

This weekend we can train together because we have no races
As a club and team, we still have some of our most important events still ahead of us. There is nothing this weekend, so I would love to organize a big ride for Saturday - Start at the Vision Center, Saturday Morning at 11 AM and ride either to Laurel River Dam or London.  60 miles either way - I hope everybody can make it for this ride!!!  If you'd like to do this ride but want to know more about it, please give me a call and I will be honest with you.. 606-215-8307

Sunday we will ride from the Vision Center - route to be decided by those who show up... Meet at 2 PM. 20 to 30 miles.

Thursday at Barnsburg. (Tomorrow night)

Races Remaining
Barnesburg Time Trial August Event - August 31

Club Event
We will probably promote a club ride to Sinking Valley Winery on September 20. Stay tuned.

2009 Team Development will get under way very soon.

Summer Fun in the Forest

After doing the very challenging Alanti Road Race, Deb and JT got to spend a day and a half in the woods with the kids, swimming and hiking.... Much needed refreshment.

Alanti Update

The racing team is in the mists of The Alanti Classic/Omnium going on in Nashville, Tennessee.  Today was the road race and time trail components of the stage Race. The racing was burtal!

Jack Evans, Adam Bourne, Aaron Denney, Debra Fortenberry all participated in this brutally hot and challenging road race. Everybody had great races, but Jack and Adam were the only ones to actually finish their road races. Due to the heat, I think the drop out rate for the road race was about 70 percent.

Jack Evans and Aaron Denney stayed in the Nashville Area for the Time Trial later in the afternoon and will also complete the Omnium by starting the Criterium tomorrow.

Results for Alanti are not known at this time.
