Crew News

Hello Crew,

Well, I have been in Colorado Springs for nearly a week now, and I am becoming acclimated to the altitude.  Deb lives at 6,500 feet so the air is a bit thin. We've been riding a lot and it is simply beautiful - training in the Garden of the Gods, or on Gold Camp Road or in Cheyenne Canyon - all in the shadows of the snow-covered ridge lines of Pikes Peak.

Garden Of The Gods | Home

Today, Saturday, we went on a large area ride that included about 30 riders.  We rode about 55 miles and it was fast and windy!!  Deb did very well on her new bike (an Eddy Merx) and we were both very pleased with everything. Deb's Son, Wyatt, also went for a ride today; a mountian bike ride up to the top of the ridge line to the west of town. Wyatt is eleven years old and it a member of a junior development team called the Front Rangers.  The Front Rangers ride mountain bikes and they also race on the velodrome here at the USA Olympic Training Center.

There are group or team rides every Wednesday at 12:30 PM, Every Saturday and Sunday and Every Tuesday and Thursday. There are 20 to 40 people who show up for these rides including the Olympic Cycling Team, the Olympic Tri Team and many pro's.

The cycling that occurs in this community (about the size of Lexington) is simply astounding and I love it.

RACING BACK HOME

I know that several folks are in Knoxville this weekend and others have done the Horsy 100.  Still yet, I believe that others have done multisport events, so if you can please email me your racing activity, I will get my points spreadsheet updated!!!

I will be home the first week of June. I am looking forward to seeing everybody when I get home!  We will have some great rides this summer, and lots of racing!!!!

MORE TO COME FROM COLORADO!!!  STAY TUNED!!!  My Son, Jon Boy will arrive here tomorrow for a week-long visit.

There are many more races to come, so stay tuned.   All of this is culminating for the State Championships in September....

Jack Evans Highland Rim Omnium results came in tonight and he placed 8th overall (crit, tt and road race)!  This is an outstanding result. And by some kind of strange happenstance, that tied him with JT for 1st place in our club points!!!!!

Our club points pay schedule is pretty straightforward and it pays small points, so it is remarkable that Jack and JT are tied at this point!  Jack and JT are both racing in the Sumner County Road Race this weekend, but Jack is also doing the Lexington Stage race time trial and road race.  So look for Jack to move in to first position soon!!!!

(for an excel spreadsheet of our points calculations, simply request from jt)

Racing this coming weekend will include the Lexington Stage Race as well as the Sumner County Cycling Classic (one day).  Here are the links.

Crew News

http://www.cumberlandcycles.com/index.html

Hello Crew,

Well, Hats Off to Jack Evans, the only Team Member to race this past weekend, and what a race it was!  Jack raced in an up hill time trial, a road race and a Criterium all in two days - Highland Rim!  Even though the rest of the racing crew has a couple of months more than Jack outside (due to his shoulder injury), Jack did very well at this very difficult race. The road race climbs up a huge mountain.... and Jack was able to beat out about eight other fellows to win a bunch sprint in the road race.

Racing this coming weekend will include the Lexington Stage Race as well as the Sumner County Cycling Classic (one day).  Here are the links.

Series Racing - Lexington

Lexington Crit - Aaron Denney

My Son and I at one of the Series Races, 08

Hello Crew,

I had some bushiness in Corbin today, so I left Somerset early enough to take the scenic drive out highway 192 to Laural River Dam and in to Corbin. It has been a confusing time for me recently. Every chance I get to slow down and immerse myself in nature can only be good.

Driving across the Daniel Boone National Forest, past our spring series race course, I noticed that the forest is up in it's greenery now... the wild indigenous magnolia are about to bloom and the lands are alive and moving and going the same way they have been for thousands of years.

It is often difficult for me to still my mind enough to know what is right and what is wrong. My Son is 16 and will soon be 17. He and I have been very close his entire life, but these times are confusing to me. And the racing, the bike racing... after 20 years away from a sport I love, I am back now, nearly as strong as I ever was.. looking as far upward as I ever did - believing I can do anything with the right training, the right support and the right frame of mind. The process, racing as often as I can - training until I drop, resting until I can rest no more - all neatly blanketed in the needs of my Son...  I know I am a intelligent person, but I am overwhelmed easily - constantly asking myself if I am on the right path, and never knowing for sure.

The greenery - the wildflowers - the blooming wild magnolia... the natural process I saw on my way to Corbin couldn't give a flip about my own processes... The woods are busy now.  I am busy now.  I am busy for a few weeks or months..... the woods have been going for thousands of years. Every year it is the same for them... I seek that quiet, calm and steady process. The cycles of nature are the finger print of God - a proof...

So that when I plunged down to the Rockcastle River on my drive to Corbin, and I crossed the bridge over the Rockcastle River, I saw a large bird sitting on the apex of a large rock... it was a Bald Eagle.  I instantly stopped on the bridge, got out of the car and looked close... it was, in fact an eagle. Bothered by my presents, it took flight and went on about it's own process.

I went on about my own process - a little more confident... Everything is going somewhere. Everything is doing it's job, including me.

I love the woods and nature.  I love my Son most of all. I love to ride and race bicycles. I love our cycling community...  whether you ride mountain bikes - or race road bikes or come out and ride as best you can - there is a deeply spiritual thing in cycling for me; racing or not.   I identify with other cyclists - no matter what their aims are. I can't really explain it. So I will not even try.

My first passion is racing - beyond that - my cycling friends.... beyond that - being outside in the trees and fields and flowers  - and frankly, being with God.

God knows, with all this blond hair of mine, I need all the help I can get.

We will all be racing soon... Our Crew Mate Jack Evans is down in Central Tennessee by himself tonight preparing for a very difficult stage race over the weekend.

Racing - riding - training - managing our shop - This is our community. Our community is about to send two of it's members to national championships ; but that end of the spectrum is no more significant than club rides at Barnsburg... we are all doing something to better ourselves. We are all in our on process.... and none are more important than the other.

Let's all ride!  It seems like the sane thing to do.

May Stage Races

(lexington crit - Aaron Denney)

Hello Crew,

The time has come to begin the summer road cycling season with the first of the big stage races coming up over the next several weekends.

First of all, Jack and JT are going to be participating in the 17th annual Highland Rim Cycling Classic in Spencer, Tennessee.  This is a road race, time trial and Criterium. The road race is a grueling tour up and over the Cumberland Mountains and it is very difficult. Jack and JT placed well last year, both in the top ten.  Highland Rim Stage Race - Tennessee

THEN WE HAVE THE LEXINGTON STAGE RACE May 16, 17 and 18 in Lexington of course. This is being up on by our friends from the Mullet Ranch/McDonalds Team. We hope that everybody can go up and do all or part of this race.  It is a time trial, Criterium and road race.

There are many more races to come!!!  Stay turned!!!

Rides at Barnsburg on Tuesday and Thursday nights have been well populated.

Be sure to thank all of our 2008 team sponsors.

First Weekend in May Rides

Hello Crew,

The team has some excellent rides this weekend. Saturday, JT, Aaron and Jenny Denney, Jack Evans, Adam Bourne rode from the Vision Senter to Laural River Dam - nearly 60 miles of burtally hilly terrane. It was an extreemly pleasant ride with some of the roads over the national forest still covered with water - refreashing. Once at the dam, the group trurned around and came back to Somerset. On the way out, we took Piney Grove Road to reduce our time on hw 192, but coming back we came straigt in on 192. It was a gourgous ride and and very inspiring.

Sunday morning, Jenny and Aaron Denney and JT rode 25 miles out to Omega and back before the general team ride. It was a fairly laid back ride and the wildflowers and blooming woods were just magnificant.

The general team ride left the vision center at 2 PM and went out Grundy to Cannon Ball Road to 1003 back in on Barnsburg with spring points paid at the church.  Then we road Pump house road back to the Vision Center. Another great ride with JT, A and J Denney, Adam Bourne, Rick Rice, Jeff Parmelee, Jack Evans and Ken (from Washington State)

We all have some very important races coming up with summer. Jack and JT and possibly Deb Fortenberry are going to particpate in the Masters National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky!  This is a road race, time trial and criterium. If anybody else is interested in attending, let me know because we have eight weeks to get ready and that is a lot of time.

Wouldn't it be amazing if we turned up a National Champion in our second year?  I'd say our chances are one in 60 so that is not bad odds!!

There are many other important race this summer which I will list out at a later time. We also have many multi-sport events as well.

The cycling year is about to kick into full swing, and we have several athletes who are ready to go!!!!
