March 29

Hello Crew!~

Well our club's multisport athletes are really pouring it on strong!!!!!!!  Jeff Parmelee and Dave Zwick participated in the Hammer Duathalon on March 24 in Lenoir City Tennessee and they did VERY WELL!  Jeff placed 3rd in his division and Dave won first place in his!  Here is a link to the results of this race: http://www.racedayevents.net/hammer   CONGRATULATIONS TO DAVE AND JEFF!

Dave and Jeff both received many Cumberland Cycles Club points for their finishes:  Dave is now tied with JT for first place and Jeff is tied with Adam Bourne for Second Place - Remember - the winner of the club points at the end of the racing year receives a $300 gift certificate at Cumberland Cycles!

CLUB STANDINGS

Speaking of our multisport altheletes - Dave Stwart and DR Swanner have been coming out to the team rides at Barnsburg the last couple weeks and man these guys are getting tough!  Remember - not only can they ride with our core bicycle road racing crew - they also run and swimm!

Cumberland Cycles is proud of our multisport altheletes!~  Maybe Marc down at Cumberland Cycles can order some Cumberland Cycles multisport clothing?

RECENT RIDES AND RACES
The road crew did not race last weekend but we had some nice rides!  Sunday saw Jack - Adam - Harvey and Brad ride 60 miles to London.  This was a fast and hot ride!  Tuesdays and Thursdays Yellow Tail ride has had some set backs with injuries and illness but it has still been leaving Barnsburg every Tuesday and Thursday.  Jamie Brum seems to be organizing that ride.  Please come on out and join our Yellow Tail group ride every Tuesday and Thursday at 530 weather permitting -

The team ride on tuesdays and thursdays has been fast! We have generally had 8 to 12 riders show up and participate in our team rides and let me tell you folks - EVERYBODY IS GETTING FIT!  Wow!!!!!  I am so encouraged for our team!

ROAD RACING will resume for our road crew on April 7 in one of two races:  Ether the Fallen Heroes Circuit Race in Louisville or the McCormics Creek Road Race near Bloomington Indiana.

The road crew will be going to Chattanooga on April 15 for the Raccoon Mountain Road Race. This is a Division I TBRA Points Race!

See our Team Blog for race flyers and future events!:  http://journals.aol.com/moonsovrbend/cumberland-cycles-crew-racing-te/

CLUB TIME TRIAL
I think everybody knows that we are having our 2nd TT of the year at Barnsburg on Sunday at 2 PM.  Please come out to participate - watch or even help!  The first four people who show up at Barnsburg Church to help out will receive a free movie pass at Somerset Cinemas!  REMEMBER:  You don't have to be a competitor to post a time in this event!  You may use the information for your own benefit and upon request - we will not post your result online.  We plan to hold this event about once a month from now until October so you can use it to monitor your fitness!

This is an 8 mile event - four miles out four miles back and it is timed - one rider leaves the start/finish every minute.  If you plan to participate - please report to the start/finish line at the junction of Barnsburg Road and KYHW 80 one mile west of Barnsburg Church sometime before 2 PM.  The first rider will leave the line very near 2 PM so everybody needs to be checked in by that time.

CUMBERLAND CYCLES TIME TRIAL TEAM
The Monrovia Time Trial Series (Indiana) allows four-person time trial teams to post 40K times!  We are planing to post a four-man 40K time sometime during this series (This summer).  If you are interested - please let us know.  We have enough strong riders to compose two seperate teams!  But since this series is a mid-week event and not many of our club riders can simply take a day off from work to drive up to Indiana - we will compose a main team with 4 alternates.  But we need to drill drill and drill!  So we need to get started right away.  There are 15 events from now until September 8 and we may post our time at any one (or more) of these events.  Our team goal for this year will not be to compete with other teams but to complete the course (25 miles) in under one hour

CUMBERLAND CYCLES News from the Shop
Remember- Marc is taking orders for 2007 CCC Jerseys for use NOW. Let Marc know if you need a new Cumberland Cycles Jersey!

Winter clothing down at the shop is on sale for about another week so get on down there and stock up for the 07/08 cold weather training season!  (We are planning on starting on 2008 club base training November 1 - 2007)  It is not too early to begin thinking about next winter and spring!

Our club will be updating our uniforms for the 2008 racing season.  This may include multisport clothing i think.  We are planing to have a uniform meeting some time this summer or early fall - Stay tuned and plan to come out and offer up your ideas!

Also - we are looking for sponsors for the 2008 racing season - Keep this in mind! A general sponsorship will be $500 and at this level - our 2008 uniforms will include the sponsors logo. There will be other levels of sponsership - less than and greater than $500.  Please contact Marc Travis for more information -

Finally - in terms of riders - remember now is the time to start recruiting for 2008!  We need riders of any level and any age to begin laying down foundations now!  Please spread the word that plan to have a very active and powerful team next year!!!!  Who knows - the next Lance Armstrong may be right here in our community!  Why not?  It's a matter of "kid meets bike" - Always -

The goal of our club and team and shop is to foster and focus current and future cycling talent!   (Philosophically speaking - would you have ever heard of Lance Armstrong if he'd never gotten on a bike as a kid?)  - Our shop and our club could be (could be) far more important than anyone currently realizes!  Who knows what could happen!

LOOSE ENDS
We have so many new riders - I have been asked to pass along something I did not actually know.  Our club is welcome to park at the Barnsburg Church for our rides but the church requests that we park in the lower parking lot.

Cumberland Cycles Crew - Yellow Tail Ride

Every Tuesday and Thursday - the casual group ride that I have been calling the Women's ride will henceforth be referred to as "The Yellow Tail Ride" - This is at the request of the riders doing the ride!  I had been mistaken that it is an all women's ride and that has not been the case -

The Yellow Tail Group obtained their names due to the fact that many of them like the color yellow and also like wine!  Very creative!

This ride will leave Barnsburg Church every Tuesday and Thursday @ 530 PM and may be attended by anyone wishing to enjoy a casual ride in the Barnsburg countryside!

A note from Marc Travis at Cumberland Cycles

Hello all, Marc here at Cumberland Cycles.  Hope this finds everyone pumped up and riding like crazy,…….or at least pumped up and ready to ride.  Would first like to send out a big THANKS to JT for all of the updates and wild enthusiasm he has brought to the local cycling group and our communications.  I know from the comments made here in the shop that all the mailings are finding a lot of interested eyes and it shows, the numbers are growing.  YAHOOOOO!!!!!!!!  The more the merrier!

If anyone made it through the winter knowing they needed a little more gear, now is the time to buy for next year.  Mention this e-mail and get 25% off any winter gear left on the rack.  We’ll keep what’s left on the rack for about another week or so and then pack it for the summer.  Grab it now while the prices are down.

Also, there have been some questions about the proper cartridges people should be using with their CO2 units.  To ease the worried minds I now have a chart here in the shop for all to see.  Just know the size tire and the recommended pressure and we’ll match you up.

Multisport Racers:  http://www.buffalotrailsraces.com/

How ‘bout some more jerseys…….if anyone would like to order a Cumberland Cycles Crew shop jersey, I will be taking orders through 4/7, that’s two weeks from now.  The jerseys are available in mens and womens cut, short sleeve or sleeveless, and jackets are also available.  The pieces pre-ordered will sell for around $65 and those on the floor for $75.  The jerseys have sold very well and I thank you all so much for your support.  I can’t believe it’s time to restock.  Again, order yours now.  Just call or swing by the shop and we’ll get your order on the list.

As usual, a few new e-mails have been added to the list so try and use this mailing for any info you might want to send to the “Cumberland Cycles Crew”.  As mentioned before, just hit reply to all, give your message some kind of new subject, type the message and send.  Using this mail will ensure that you are reaching the most updated list of those interested.  Again, any additions or deletions just let me know.

As for product, the season is upon us and the shop is stocked.  As always, if you need it and I don’t have it, I’ll get it.  Just let me know.

Again, thank you all for your continued support.  It seems obvious the numbers are just continuing, to grow.  The more cyclists we have the more we are seen, hence, the safer we will be.

Ride On, Ride Safe, Livestrong!!!!

March 26

We are going to hold our second 2007 time trial at Barnsburg on Sunday April 1 at 2PM.  Parking is available at Barnsburg Church located on kyhw 80 about five miles east of Somerset.  If you desire to complete the course and post a time - be sure to check in at the start/finish before 2 PM to receive your start time.  The start/finish is located at the junction of Barnsburg Road and kyhw 80 about 1 mile west of Barnsburg Church.   PLEASE COME OUT AND WATCH!  Ride your bike on out to the Barnsburg church and support those who are posting times!  Mingle and get integrate yourself into our cycling community!  You don't have to post a time to be a part of our club or team!

This event is an open non-sanctioned event and every rider rides at their own risk - it is open to anybody who would like to attend.  We are hoping to have some of our London folks come over and post a time!  You don't have to be a team racer or even a club rider!  Just show up and ask for a start time and we will take care of the rest!

If you do not want to compete - we could also use some club volunteers!  We could use timing staff - star/finish pre/at/post rider identification.  We need holders and we need course marshals - So if you are a club rider and want to get involved with our event - please show up between 1 PM and 130 PM and we will certainly put you to work!  We also need spectators!

The rest of our racing year is filling up pretty fast - I would say that about 80% of our regional races have been scheduled and they may be found here: Cumberland Cycles Races

Our races include three time trial series up in Indiana each consisting of 10 to 15 events- one of which will allow us to compete as a four man team!  The Monrovia Time Trial Series allows four man teams to compete in the 40 K time trail!  I think that we should begin to form a time trial team to go up to Monrovia to post a 40K (25 mile) time of 60 minutes or less (25 MPH average)  in this first year of our team! A team goal!  We will begin to recruit those 4 team members after this Sundays Barnsburg Time Trial event!  The four fastest team member finishes will be offered a spot on the squad - refusals will result in offerings to the next fastest times -

Our non-team members will be competing for shop points!  These will be redeemable at for goods and services at Cumberland Cycles!

I am not sure but I think that our team must complete our best running of Monrovia by July 1st in order to be ranked in the USCF District - but i'm not sure - We may do any Monrovia event from now until July as I understand it and they will accept our fastest turn - See our race schedule for event dates at Monrovia - Once the 4-member squad has been selected - we will all meet and decide when we want to post our time - We will also have to train together a few times before the event!  Thats for sure!

March 24

Hello Crew!~

The team ended up not racing this weekend since Jack had to go to Cincy and Adam came down with a bug.  JT accepted an invitation to go ride with our London neighbors Saturday and it was an excellent ride!  Dave G - Nick G - Carrie G - Dave C - Dave D- Ryan and JT all drove out to Red Bird past Manchester then rode a 75 mile ride up to Booneville and what an excellent ride it was!   I (JT) jumped into a brisk pace line for the first 15 miles then when the terrane got more mountainous - not knowing the land - i fell back and rode with those not wishing to paceline. Once in Boonville the group stopped at a store and got some water and drinks then headed back to Red Bird.  On the way back - Nick G - and excellent junior racer for Nashville's Juris team - started attacking and Dave C and I were able to go along with him.  The three of us hammered for about 15 miles then stopped for drinks at a store and allowed the group  to reform.  The last 15 miles were just excellent - riding through the high countryside of eastern Kentucky with these great cyclists - talking and chatting and just having a very nice time in the warm/down right hot sunshine!  It was most enjoyable and I thank the London Shop for having me over for this very nice ride!

During the last 15 miles - Dave G (owner of the London Bike Shop) and I talked about training.  Dave is a USCF licensed cycling coach and if anybody is looking for a cycling coach - please give Dave a call at the London Bike Shop

GOOD NEWS FOR CUMBERLAND CYCLES BIKE SHOP
Marc Travis has been very busy these last few weeks!  With the warm weather and all of this new interest in cycling in the Somerset area - Marc has been simply overwhelmed down at the shop!!!!!  This is great news since we want our shop to be strong and successful!  Good Job Marc!  We are growing faster - stronger - bigger and by next year we are going to have a very nice club/team ready to compete and win some races!

The only draw back to all of this business is that Marc himself might be getting overworked!  I think it might be nice if some of our club members could volunteer to watch the shop from time to time for an hour or two every once and awhile just to give Marc the opportunity to go out and eat lunch or run errands or any like that - He's a one-man-show and I personally don't know how he does it!  (I hope he doesn't mind me saying all of this) - mechanically inclined volunteers a plus!  Lets see what we can do to help Marc a little bit in the busy time -

CLUB TIME TRIAL ON SUNDAY APRIL 1 AT 2 PM-
Park at the Barnsburg church and ride one mile west to the Barnsburg/Kentucky 80 junction - this is the start/finish area - this is also where you will check in

Please report to the start/finish area before 2 PM to get checked in and to receive your start time.  Remember this is an open non-sanctioned event and is open to all of our club riders!  We will hold this event about once a month from now until October so even if you do not race - you may use this event to monitor your own fitness!

This is an eight mile - out and back time trial and one rider leaves the line every minute - no drafting is allowed - it is each rider against the clock.  Upon request - we will not post your results online.  The course consists of Barnsburg Road from highway 80 north east to 461 - riders then turn and go back to the start/finish line -

March 22 - The Hammer Drops!

www.cumberlandcycles.com

The Hammer Drops!

Tonight's (Thursday night ride) at Barnsburg was somewhat brutal!  Jack Evans - Adam Bourne - Jeff Ekoniak - JT and Roger Whitlock composed the team ride this evening and it was one of the most difficult rides of the year so far!  Jack - Adam - Jeff and Roger are all getting brutally strong!  The average pace was well over 20 MPH until we got back to Barnsburg Road at which time the pace dropped to an average of over 19.  After a fast 25 mile ride - the group completed a series of three sprints along Barnsburg Road.  Jeff E got two of the three by going off the front a mile before the line - and Adam got the field sprint.  JT lead Jack out for one sprint and Jack won that one.

With only team members on this ride - all of which with racing experience - the ride was - in a word - FAST!

Kerry - DR and Dave rode tonight as well as did five of our women riders -

WEEKEND RACING
The team will race at Clark State Forest on Saturday.

The team will ride Sunday at 130 - hopefully a long ride (maybe to London and back)

There are no races in our area on the weekend of April 1 so we will have a club time trial at Barnsburg.  This event is open to our entire club - racers and non racers!

We want to wish Jeff Ekoniak a great trip this Saturday to Alabama where he intends to complete a large organized century -

CLUB TIME TRIAL
APRIL 1 - Sunday at 2 PM - park at the Barnsburg Church then ride west one mile on Barnsburg Road to the start finish - 8 miles out and back -  Call Cumberland Cycles for more info

We are going to award points in our remaining club time trials to our club riders!  Our team riders will earn three points for participating - but they will not be eligible for finishing points
.  This will allow our club riders to compete in our club points standings without being committed to the bike racing circuit! Men and women club riders will be placed separately and they will each earn club points on the following scale:

1 10
2 9
3 8
4 7
5 6
6 5
7 3
8 2
9 1

Remember our racers are not eligible for these points! (if you have not entered a sanctioned bike race prior to your result then you will be given points on the above scale) - also remember that everybody who posts a time in the club time trial will be given three points in addition to the finishing points.  Each participating team member will earn the three participating points.  Also remember that we intend to conduct our club time trial about once a month from now until October!  Non racing club members have an opportunity to rack up a lot of points -

The club member with the most points at the end of the year wins a $300 shopping certificate at Cumberland Cycles! (since JT is keeping track of this he is not eligable for the certificate)

March 21

Hello Crew!~

JT Finally Gets a Result!

All of our riders - Adam - Jack - Jeff  and Brad have placed so far in our spring races - the obvious exception has been me- JT!

The Lascassas Time Trial Results were finally published today and it looks like i finally got a result! I placed 3rd in the Masters 40+ Division and won 13 BAR Points.  Just to give you an indication of how rough this 6 mile time trial was (point to point into a head wind and up hill!)  my field had ten starters and only five finishers!  My time was 63rd overall including the professional riders and there were 117 times posted for the entire time trial field (all categories and divisions).  I would liked to have placed better overall but i was only a couple  of minutes off the fastest time so I am very pleased with that.  Two Gran Fondo riders beat me in the 40+  Division.

RECENT RIDES
The mens team/strong club riders had a great ride Tuesday at Barnsburg. Nine riders showed up i think and it was a very nice ride.  I am taking a recovery week this week so i sat on the back and refused to go to the front and mix it up with Charles/Chuck- Jack- Harvey- Rick and Mark.  I stayed back with two of our up and coming riders - Dave Stewart and Kerry Fain.  Dave is a tri-guy and has completed a marathon (the thought of which just blows me away) and he is recovering from an injury. Kerry Fain has been a mile-animal recently and he is going to be a force to be reckoned with very soon!  We are looking forward to seeing both of these fellows go to the front in the next four weeks and inject their own dynamic to our team and our rides!

Chuck Senters has obviously been logging some miles - he is a tremendously powerful rider and never misses an opportunity to hammer!  He is totally gung ho and intense and when this fellow gets a few more miles in him - the rest of us will be scrambling just to get a wheel!  After a hectic few weeks - Harvey is getting a few more miles and he is always near the front - Harvey is a pivit-man as he always has the best wheel - if you want the best wheel in the ride - look for Harvey because he's gotit.  Adam and Jack are simply inspiring.  These two have been racing a lot this spring and it show - Jacks beautiful form is soothing to watch especially when cascades down those 50 MPH decents with total control and fearlessness!  Adam is Jacks inverse - he climbs like a billy goat and leaves us all groaning when the grades go positive!

Mark Henry is going to be competing in a triathlon soon and has been logging some great miles - he is always nearby when the action heats up.  I have heard through the grape vine that Mark has been unpleased with the progress that he has made over the last couple of months but based on our most recent rides - he must have come out of the slump because he has "been there".

Rick Rice rides with our team frequently and stays near the front or even off the front the entire time- then after the ride he goes to run with Jeff Parmelee.  He was wearing yellow-lensed eyeware Tuesday and it occurred to me - he's a machine!  Just an overall excellent athlete!  We wish Mark and Rick and Jeff well in tris this year !

I have no news from the womens group and would love to have somebody write a blog entry for the ladies!  It doesn't have to be competitive - an update would be great for our female riders (who are very neglected in this blog - but I have no info!)

WEEKEND RACING
The team is still unsure if it will race this weekend at Clark State Forest on Saturday.  We will either ride 80+ miles on Saturday or race -what ever everybody decides.  There are no races in our area on the weekend of April 1 so we will have a club time trial at Barnsburg.

2008
We are looking for ten local sponsors to donate to our team for the 2008 racing season.  A $500 contribution from a local business will earn that company a logo spot on our team uniform.  The sponsorship money will be used to purchase our 2008 uniforms so that our riders may get a discount!  We will also use the money to pay some travel expenses next year for our riders to participate in races.  Our club is also very interested in recruiting junior riders so please let us know if you know any young people interested in racing bikes in 2008!  We also need general team riders and women!  Now is the time to start riding if you want to race for our only Somerset Team next year!

2008 UNIFORM
Marc Travis - owner of Cumberland Cycles will hold a meeting in the next few months for ideas and discussion on the 2008 team uniform - and other ideas about the team - stay tuned

TEAM/SHOP/SPONSERS - HOW IT WORKS
We need our shop - Cumberland Cycles. Therefore - we need to find ten $500 sponsors to support our team next year.  Supporting our team money wise is not Cumberland Cycles responsibility.  That is our sponsors responsibility.  We must keep our shop healthy and able to provide us with our resources as a team (mechanics +matterials).  We and our sponsors will share the costs of this products and NOT OUR SHOP!   If you know of a company would like to sponsor a bike team - ($500 one-time) please let us know.  As team members - we should not expect discount from the shop but we can receive discounts based on our sponsorships contributions.  Since this (2007)is an "organizational year" we will be concentrating on 2008 as a team while our pioneering racers will be focused on the 2007 racing season!

Lasscassas Road race - March 17

Hello Crew!~

TEAM BLOG:   team blog
EVENTS:   Cumberland Cycles Races

I have received several requests to remove folks from the mailing list and I have made an attempt.  If you are receiving this email and do not want to continue - please let me know and be patient since it takes some time!

We had a great weekend of racing this past weekend!  Jack E - Jeff E and Adam Bourne all raced in the KY IN racing series race at Columbia Kentucky and we had some great results!   Jeff E placed in the main field (which had been cut down about 90 percent!  Jeff finished 7th and earned 9 pnts!  Adam placed 13th and earned 3 pnts!  Jack placed about 20th and had a great race.

Jeff Ekoniak has the highest placement so far of any club racer and we want to congratulate him on his excellent effort!  We also want to encourage him to KEEP IT UP!!!  Great Job Jeff!

JT and Frank Cornett raced at Lasscassas near Nashville Tennessee last weekend and JT punctured both tires on rough road after the first 20 mile lap.  Frank Cornett placed 4th in the Masters 60+ race and earned BAR Pnts.  JT went on to compete in the time trial that afternoon but those results have not been published.  JT may have gotten last or first or anything in between!

TEAM FOUNDATION
Remember it is not anywhere too late for you to train and race in 07!  Let us know if you'd like to train and race this summer and fall!  We can help!

If you have always wanted to race bikes but never got around to it - now is the time to start putting down a foundation for 2008!  We are looking for men - women - juniors (boys and girls aged 13-17) and masters (30+) to race for our team!  Remember this is Cumberland Cycles Foundation year and if you are not in shape to race this spring or even this year doesn't mean you can't get started on your goals for this fall or even next year!!!  We have some foundation rides every week now at Barnsburg so now is the time to come on out and join in on the fun and fitness and excitement!!!

Our Foundation rides from Barnsburg every Tuesday and Thursday will be completely non-competitive and are designed to promote and recruit club riders in our community.  It would be a great place to begin or re-begin your cycling career!

March 14

(CCC Team Rider Adam Bourne in the Staging Area for his race last Saturday in Knoxville)

Hello Crew!

REMINDER:  We will hold a club time trial at Barnsburg on Sunday, April 1 @2PM.  Remember this is only for your benifit as a rider.  You may use the information you obtain from the time trial in a number of ways, most importantly, to gage your own personal fitness over the course of the year.  We plan to hold a TT at about once a month.  We would love to have you participate in this event and you do not have to be a racer to enjoy this activity!  Everyone is envited to attend and post a time. Upon request, we will not publish your time.

Well I have to say; my gosh!  For our first weekly club/team ride event at Barnsburg today, we filled the lower parking lot of the Barnsburg Church!  Mark Henry was heard saying that this must be some sort of record!  I don't know because I am new to the Somerset Cycling Scene, but it if was a record turnout, THAT IS GREAT!  Cycling is such a great sport whether you race or sport ride or tour - it is just a great pass time!  I would like to personally thank each and every person who came out to ride.  I know you didn't come out for me or my benefit, but it certainly made my year!!!!!!  It made the work I have been doing with this blog worth the effort and much much more!

Tonight the women's ride got off at 5:30 and were already on the road by the time i showed up.  The Club and team groups started out together but separated after a few miles. The club ride was headed up by Tim Howard and Jeff Coylier and they did a great job keeping that group together.  I want to thank both of them for seeing to it that everybody had somebody to ride with!

The racing group shot off the front pretty fast thanks to Charles Senters who can always be relied upon to keep the early pace pretty hot. The racing group rode impressively tonight, and it felt as if I was doing a pace similar to a sanctioned race!  After Charles split the group, Roger Whitlock continued to keep the pace hot, followed by one of our club triathletes, Mark Henry. Mark has suddenly gotten pretty dang fit!!!  The last half of the team ride was pretty muchdominated by Adam Bourne whowent to the front and started hammering in a manner that made the rest of the ride particularly uninjoyable!  But Jack Evans and I were able to collaborate and give Adam a run for his money (I think).

I am soimpressed with our crew!  Our racers are getting fit.  Our Tri's are getting fit and our club riders are so inspiring!  Thank you all so much for being my cycling pals!  If there is anything I can do to facilitate your goals in cycling, please let me know.  I would  be happy to help in any way I possibly can.

March 13

(Above photo is JT wearing Cumberland Cycles in the South Knoxville Road Race - Photo by Jack Evans)

Jack Evans, Adam Borne and JT raced in Knoxville last Saturday and all three of us were pleased with our results!  Adam finished 21st in the Cat V division in the field finish, Jack finished 10 in the Masters 50/60 field finish and JT finished in the Masters 30/40 field finish!  Excellent news!  Here is a link to the official race results:
knoxville March 10  Jack may have acquired some TBRA Points in his finish and if so, the team may decide to race in Murfreesboro this Saturday!

Races this weekend include the Lascassas Road Race and Time Trail (March 17) in the Nashville Tennessee area. race link:
lascassas  This race bares TBRA Points so if Jack Evans scored points last Saturday then he should continue in the TBRA races.  Adam Borne and Brad Herman will be racing this coming weekend in Columbia Ky.   If Jack did not acquire any points last Saturday then JT and Jack Evans and Harvey S will join Adam and Brad in Columbia.

The race in Columbia is less than one hour away from Somerset, so it would be an excllent event to go spectate!  We would all love to have club members come out and watch especially since we will not race this close to home again until September in London!!!   Here is the link for the race:
Green River Road Race

There have been some extremely enjoyable rides recently!  Rice Rice, Jack Evans, Harvey Schleter, Adam Borne and JT rode Sunday in the glorious warmth and sunshine!  Adam seems to be our team climber and he "thumped" everybody on the ride!  We are looking forward to seeing Adam race this Saturday at Green River because that is a hilly  race.

Today I had two of the most enjoyable rides that I have had! Kerry Fain, Aaron Denny and I rode out to Buck Creek Boat Dock at Noon and these two club riders have really come a long way!  Both of these guys are impressive in their enthusiasm and progress.  Aaron is simply inspiring to watch.  I don't think he would mind me telling this, but just four weeks ago, he had a hard time simply getting to the top of Haynes Knob.  Today he hammered it and climbed it at least a minute faster than anybody else!  I just love seeing what happens when a rider trains like Aaron has been!  It's a "God Thing".

Probably the most enjoyable ride I have had in some time was with one of our excellent female club riders,  Laura, this afternoon at Barnsburg.  I had intended to meet to club/team riders but they were not able to show up.  Instead of hooking up with a club/team ride, I was about to give up and go home when Laura showed up to do a solo ride.  I decided to ride with her and what a wonderful time it was!  We bird watched and she pointed on some of her favorite views of the landscape of our course.  It is strange - that I typically enjoy nature and the land but i have been so focused on the racing and training, i have not generally noticed much of nature lately!  My ride with Laura was exactly what I was hoping for today!  Physical, mental, spiritual and emotional recovery from the intense training and racing!  This is what club riding is all about!

There will be a Club ride at Barnsburg Tomorrow Tuesday, March 14 @ 6 PM
There will also be a Team Ride at Barnsburg Tomorrow Tuesday, March 14 @ 6PM

March 8 - News

www.cumberlandcycles.com

Hello Crew!~

The CCC Team will be competing Saturday morning in Knoxville Tennessee in the South Knoxville Road Race.  Jack E JT and Adam B are leaving Somerset between 4 and 5 AM on Saturday and will return the same day.   Knox Road Race

There is a Crit on Sunday March 11 in Knoxville but CCC is not officially attending this race. Knox Road Race

There is also a KY/IN Series race in Henryville Indiana on Saturday:   Henryville Classic

Next weekend - March 17 is going to be a busy race weekend:  We have a KY/IN Series race in Columbia Kentucky which we all plan to attend!  There is also a TBRA points race and time trial in Murfreesboro TN that same day:  Here are the links:
lascassas
Green River Road Race

Since both of these races bare points in separate regions (Green River=Ky/IN and Lascassas= TN)  if any of our riders do well enough in Knoxville on Saturday to earn points in Tennessee then the Crew may race at Lascassas since that is also a Tennessee points race.  If not then we will all attend the KY/IN Series race in Columbia.

Three Weeks from Now:  March 24 race:  Clark State Forest- KY/IN Series:  Clark State Forest

CLUB TIME TRIAL AT BARNSBURG:  Sunday April 1 - 2007 @ 2 PM - more details later

The time changes this Saturday Night so the club intends to continue the Barnsburg Rides on Tuesday and Thursday next week!  Each Tuesday and Thursday there will be two rides:  One will be a fast/team ride and the other will be a much more moderate club ride.  Both rides will meet at the Barnsburg Church at 6 PM  (for now) each Tuesday and Thursday.  As daylight grows longer - we may make the meet time a little later -

Please come out and join us from the start!!!  If you've not been on a bike this year or even if you've not been on a bike ever - our Foundation Rides from Barnsburg will be a great place for you to start!

Saturday and Sunday rides will be posted each week since the team will be racing most Saturdays.

Sunday March 11 - Team Ride - @ The Vision Center @ 130 PM

Cumberland Cycles News - March 5 - A lot going on

We have three races this coming weekend - our team is considering two of them:  Jack Evans and JT are going to participate in the South Knoxville Road Race:  While Adam Borne may be going to Race #2 of the Spring Series in Henryville Indiana.  Adam may have placed high enough in last weeks Spring Series at L'Esprit to gain some GC points and he may be in the hunt for a good placement in the overall Series.  If Adam did land in the points then he certainly should go to Henryville instead of Knoxville - but Jack and I are going to Knoxville along with Bob Brooks - my coach from Indy.  If Adam did not acquire any points (it is still questionable due to a pack sprint crash) then Adam may opt to go to Knoxville with Jack and I.  Anyone wishing to compete in the Knoxville race must register either online before the race or Friday night at the Fairfield inn the night before the race.  There will be NO "Day Of" registration".  You will be able to register on the day of the race at Henryville.

There is also a crit on Sunday March 11 in the Knoxville area which I will not be participating - If you are interested in this race here is the link:  Southern Cycling Operations

DONT FORGET!!  The next Series Race will be held on March 17 just one hour from Somerset in Columbia:   Green River Road Race.  If we have a Cat V rider (Adam) in the points already then Cumberland Cycles Crew needs to complete the series in support of Adam!  After the Columbia race there will be four more races in that series.  Here they are:   Series Races

DONT FORGET about the Laurel Lake Mt Bike Ride for beginners and intermeds conducted by our sister shop - The London Bike Shop/Dave Grisby - March 10 at Laurel Lake: Kentucky Mountain Bike Association

UP AND COMING CENTURY RIDE:   Anniston: City News Cumberland Cycles Crew Club Rider Jeff Coniack will be attending this one -

JT and his Dad will be taking a weekend off from racing to do a tour: Even though it is not an offical "Father/Son" event - my Dad and I are approaching it in that fashion:  We'd love to have any Cumberland Cycles Crew join us for this very excellent cycling event!  :
3-State 3-Mountain

YELLOW FLAG RIDES:
Rides for our non-racing club members will commence next week after the time chance!!!!  Stay tuned!!!!!  We have several great riders ready to go!

LONDON BUNCH/PACELINERS
Our London cycling friends were hosted to a ride this past weekend in Pulaski County by Dave/Tim Howard and Jeff Coylier.  Dave Grisby - owner of The London Bike Shop wrote a glowing review of the ride and I would like to thank Tim and Jeff for hosting our very respectable London Neighbors.  All of our crew needs to plan on visiting our London group for a training ride sometime soon as they have some very excellent and accomplished riders! They are the hosts of our last official race of the year - the biggest one!!!  The Tour De London And that is just one indication of how cohesive our fellows and gals from just to our east really are!  We would all further our cycling careers to embrace the London bunch as folks we can share with and learn from!

Adam Born - Brad Herman and I went up to Race #1 of the Kentucky/Indiana Spring Training series Saturday morning and the weather was - in a word- foul!  Ironically when we all left Somerset at 7 AM it was over 40 degrees and clear and sunny!  As we entered Louisville/Metro - it was 32 degrees and snowing!  Wind gusts were up to 30 MPH but that did not prevent a great turnout for this early season race!

Even though weather conditions were brutal - there were several hundred cyclists at the event including all of the regions biggest and best teams
.  Brad and Adam raced the CAT 4-5 race while I raced in the Cat 3-4.  These series races are not divided by age!  Adam and Brad were both pleased with their results but Adam was quoted as saying "It's the most fun i can imagine having without breaking the law"!  Adam was present for a field finish and is reasonably sure he finished "Same Time" in the top 15.

Each field consisted of about 50 riders and with the wind - the pack really moved and jostled around and it was sometimes hard to get a good wheel  -  several bad crashes occurred as well -

I don't know how fast the 4-5 race was but I can attest that the 3-4 race was brutally fast!  My field was to complete 5 ten mile laps and small breakaways launched one right after the other right from the start!  I jumped in and helped chase down some of the breakaways but after thirty very fast miles- I decided that i could no longer help keep things intact and in fact- i had a hard time even fightinginternally to stay in the front half of the pack.  I was at the back of the pack and i was content just recovering when I realized that the pack had split somewhere in front of me and i was in the second half.  I was able to hitch a ride back to the main pack with two other riders but that took about 15 minutes of very high effort.  When we caught the back of the main field i continued to sit on the back until - after a few miles - a second split occurred and i was unable to neutralize it.

For Cumberland Cycles - this was a training race and what an excellent one it was!  It was brutally cold and our races were fast!  And we got at least one top 15 finish with Adam!!

The next race in this excellent series is March 10 in Henryville IN:
Henryville Classic There is also a race in Knoxville, TN that same day and that race is sectioned by age!

Cumberland Cycles News - March 1

Hello Cumberland Cycles Crew!

Let me begin this on a personal note-

Back in the 1980s My Dad and I (and several dear friends) raced intensively for a few years and we had a great time and great successes.  Both of us won several races at that time.  But after I graduated from college and got married and had kids- there wasn't any time for training or racing - and my job as a geologist was completely time consuming.  After 18 years away from the bike and racing- my conditions changed and allowed me to train and race again -

Beginning last Labor Day - I decided to get back on the bike!  After a week or two by myself - i mustered the courage to ride with Harvey S in the middle of September and he promptly kicked my butt!  I also went on some Barnsburg Rides with the crew and - struggle as i did - i was completely unable to stay with the group on any kind of grade at all!  After a month or so - i began to do better and was able to keep up!  As the weeks have gone by  - I have kept my miles up and - as always - my body has not let me down!  God gave us all a remarkable machine and it responds so incredibly well to training!

Now - six months later - I am ready to start racing again!  I don't know how I will do- but at least I will give it a try;  I am a little intimidated but that is normal - I am ready to begin this adventure and it starts in less than 48 hours!  I am nowhere near as a strong as I hope to be - but then how could i be after only six months?  I have a lot of work to do and I and looking forward to it with my new team!  My hometown team -

I want to thank the "Crew" - everybody who rode with me over these six months - thanks for dropping me so many times - thanks for attacking me when i needed it and thanks for being there to nurse me back into cycling!  And thanks for letting me use a spare tube or two!  I want to thank Marc Travis and Cumberland Cycles as well- Marc has been a good friend and a tremendous supporter -

We have some very strong riders in the area and I am so excited about our team!!!  We are a spangled group - various racing categories and age divisions but we are cohesive and we seem to know each others strengths and weakness.  Our Cat V crew consists of Adam Bourne - Jack Evans - Harvey S - Roger Whitlock and Brad Herman.  We are also excited about the prospect of having several other riders join us later in the year:  Kerry Fain - Aaron Denny - Tim Howard - Charles Senters - Jeff Parmelee - Jeff C - Jeff Colyier - Mark Henry - DR - Dave Stewart and Rick Rice and others!  Some of these fellows are busy running and training for tris but we are still hoping to convert them!

There have been many rides and even a meeting since my last general club news!  Several members of The Cumberland Cycling Crew met at the Doolin House in Somerset last week to listen to a presentation about Hammer Products given by Brad Herman!  It was a very nice time and we had a great turn out!  Thanks to everybody who showed up!

The weather is warming up and we've had some nice rides!  Folks seem generally excited about cycling these days and that is really great to see!  We have several CAT V racers who are ready to begin racing and I do believe our Vs will be able to win a race or two this spring!!!

The Kentucky/Indiana Spring Training Series begins on Saturday March 3 in Louisville. The forecast for the Louisville on Saturday is not all that good but Adam JT and Brad will be going up for Race #1 in the KY/IN Spring Series!  There are many races this year and they can be found here:
Cumberland Cycles Races
We have a race pretty much every weekend from now until September!

For those of you who are not race-ready- don't worry. You still have plenty of time to get into shape even if you have not ridden a single mile this year.  Just let up know how we can support you to get you ready to race again or race for the first time.  We can help you get your equipment in order and we can help you construct a basic training schedule to get you going and moving in a positive direction!  We have a certified cycling coach as near as London who would be happy to work with you at a personal level.

For those of you who are not interested in racing - stay tuned as we will begin to publish non-competitive rides soon!  The time change will occur this year on March 11 so we will begin to see much more daylight!
