The Kentucky/Indiana Spring Cycling Road Series concluded this past weekend in Louisville with bicycle races held on Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20. The Somerset-based cycling team, Cumberland Cycles Racing Team and Club, participated in the Series with some remarkable results.
The Series began on March 1, in Louisville and ran every weekend through April 20; a total of eight races, generally on Saturdays. From Louisville, the racing migrated up to Indiana, over to Owensboro and then came to Somerset on March 22 (the Mt. Victory Road Race). The Series Finals were held in the Louisville area this past weekend.
Each of the eight races awarded winners of the day and, just like the Tour De France, scores were kept over the entire Series. The Series has become a very difficult cycling event with the best road cyclist in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, and other states participating, including many former and current national champions, Olympic veterans as well as Olympic hopefuls.
In order to score points in this cycling series, a rider must finish in the top 15 places in any one or more of the eight races. No age bonuses are given and racers are required to participate in categories according to their racing experience (Categories 1,2,3,4 or 5). The Series, which began in 1980, was originally designed to get cyclists prepared to race throughout the remainder of the year.
This year, Cumberland Cycles Racing Team and Club were given the opportunity to host one of the eight Series races. This race was held in the Shopville/Mt. Victory area and was a great success thanks to the efforts of many of the cycling club members, our club sponsors and the race sponsors, First Southern National Bank, Cumberland Cycles Bike and Skate Shop and Southern Belle Dairy. The Somerset-based race achieved great notoriety for its challenging, mountainous profile. The overall success of the race was due in large part to the personal efforts of Brad Herrman, Marc Travis and Charles Senters.
Many area bicycle racers participated in the Series and more than half of them scored points in the general standings. These riders include the following, in order of points scored: Debra Fortenberry (15 points), Jonathan Thompson (13), Adam Bourne (12), Charles "Chuck" Senters (12), Jenny Denney (11), Jack Evans (11), Aaron Denney (8), Brad Herrman, Doyle Swanner, Frank Cornet, James Garman, Jeff Parmelee and Mark Henry. These eleven individuals posted a total of 42 individual "starts" in the series races, with the highest, single day finish going to Adam Bourne, 5th place at the Mt. Victory Road Race.
The Somerset-based cycling team and club will continue racing through the year with many difficult races to come this summer. The bicycling club will also host many recreational rides in the area.
Bicycle racing has come to Somerset!

Having raced the last seven consecutive weekends - logging 11,000 miles on the bike in the past 18 months, it occurs to me at times in my life, I can be too focused.
I love to fish for trout.... I love to go back packing. I love to hunt gensing and look for wild flowers and I love to float small creeks in small boats with good friends.
Deep in the midst of this spring racing season, I took this Sunday to spend time with my friend, Harvey, floating down Pitman Creek in a canoe. I did not turn a bicycle crank today, and I was proud of myself for it. It was a cold, blustery day, but many wild flowers were blooming in the woods - the creek was charged with the rains of the recent storms. With my good friend right there in front of me - both of us in a narrow boat, we navigated the many rocks and logs and fast water of the stream... The day, not ideal for a river outing by any means; our hands cold in the gentle rain and mild wind - some would have considered it down right miserable... But my friend and I floated our boat under an overhanging rock and we ate pretzelized goldfish - a snack Harvey's wife tossed to him just as he was leaving for his adventure with me. Even though I was physically cold, I was warm inside - glowing in the company of my good friend - glowing in the mists of the woods and wildflowers of my homeland - aboard a small boat on a small stream...
In these days of racing and training, it is not often I get to "mingle with the twinkling stars" - slow Sundays on a creek with a good friend and a bag of "gold fish" in a fine boat on an excellent stream, don't come cheap. I had no idea what my team mates were doing.. But I needed time to shake hands with the basics... just like all of us... As a community. We all have so much upon us....
Mark, Marc, Jeff, Harvey, Jack and so many others have businesses to run.... Chuck and Melenda are having a baby soon. Brad, and Adam with their new jobs - and me - worried sick about my son and where the heck he is going to spend his summer..... Kerry and his family who have just lost their father.
The cycling club I envision is not the one that is totally cycling performance based... but a community of people who are rising to meet their individual challenges... and then finding time to rideor race bicycles. I personally don't care if you ever race or win or even turn a crank.... our common ground is that we like to ride bicycles and we are human beings. We need to support each other no matter what our cycling goals are - not matter what our situations.
Harvey sat in the boat in front of me today - in the cold rain on a small boat, on a small stream that was cranking lots of fast water. He sat up there all day in his funny hat and his poncho that made his look like batman. Harvey is one of the most gifted cyclists I know, yet he does not chose to race. Harvey is my friend and I value him even though he has never won the tour de France.
Racing bikes in 1 part in 99 - in terms of the "human experience" for me. Cycling is simply a physical outlet... It is the experience that I am interested in.... Wildflowers... woods - caves, rocks and streams... but mostly - Mostly Friends......
Race #6 of 8 was held today in Louisville and Jack Evans and JT attended the Iroquois Park Circut Race. JT raced in the 3/4 event and Jack Raced in the 4/5 Masters Event. Both were very happy with their results.
The course was a very fast, narrow, one lane wooded slab of asphalt running three miles through this Louisville Urban park. The curves, climbs, descents and bad road surface made the race harrowing! Both fields were packed with JT and Jack risking life and limb just to hang on to this very fast race!
JT held on to the main field for an 8th place pack finish (11th over all) and Jack stayed with the main field for a 7th place finish!!!
Here are some photos!

RACE 7 AND 8 PAYING DOUBLE POINTS IN LOUISVILLE NEXT WEEKEND |
The Mullet Ranch Crew is a very fine and competitive team and they are all very good people! We are proud to consider them our friends. When you see them at races, greet them kindly. Expect them to be kind in return... but be prepared for them to kick some butt in your race!
123 race at Mt. Victory
Tonight's club and team ride at Barnsburg was very well attended. We had the general team ride, two separate club rides and a women's ride. Our club filled the parking lot at the church, and it seemed to me, everybody managed to fit right into the ride of their suiting. It made me very happy to see so many of our club and team members out riding tonight. I think we probably had 30 riders in various groups out tonight. AND THAT IS AWSUM.
Thursday night there will be another club and team ride and the temps are supposed to be in the 80's. I hope we can have another great turnout.
Since I was on the team ride, that is the only report I can give: The team left the church and proceeded to do the 17 mile Cannon Ball loop. There were club points available at the top of Cannon Ball Hill and final point available back at the church - both of which Adam Bourne won. We had seven riders on our ride and everybody is riding very well, especially Nick Cabrini. Nick was awarded 10 extra club points for the most improved rider recently. Charles Senters and Adam Bourne combined themselves against JT and Jack Evans and really did some damage. We are going to have to seperate those two sometime soon! It was a fun ride and it was especailly rewarding seeing Nick ride so well.
Everybody seemed to have a great time and I hope we can continue to build our numbers... It is such a great time of the year to ride!!! And there are several groups forming so I am sure you can find a group that will pace at your comfort level!!!
The team will be racing in race #5 of 8 in the Ky/In Spring Road Series this Saturday in Louisville. Sunday there will be a team ride from the Vision Center at 2 PM.

Well Crew, The Kentucky/Indiana Spring Training Series is half over. Four races are done, and there are four races left. The Series will conclude with on the weekend of April 19th with two races that weekend in the Louisville area.
What is truly outstanding is the fact that The Cumberland Cycles Racing Crew has had a total of 31 individual starts in the first four races of the series! With our great looking uniforms on that many shoulders combined with the overwhelming success of our own race in the Series, Mt. Victory, I believe we are getting noticed!!!!
Even though all of our riders are "long shots" and not really in striking distance of winning the overall series, we do have several riders who are on the score board in the series. These individual scores belong to Adam Bourne, Debra Fortenberry, Jenny Denney, Aaron Denney, Charles Senters and JT
So far, we have had some good success with the racing - considering that it is technically our first year as an official team. Our highest place to date is that of Adam Bourne, 5th in the CAT 4/5 race at Mt. Victory. Ms. Debra Fortenberry placed 7th in the women's race at Mt. Victory with Jenny Denney placing 8th in that same race. Charles Senters and JT both had 8th place finishes at the Booneboro Criterium; Charles in the 4/5 race and JT in the 3/4 race. Aaron Denney placed 9th at Boonsboro as well. The remainder of our finishes have included very good field finishes in the 20 and 30 place range.... which is very respectable considering there are several national champions racing in this series.
Based on these results - I would have to say, we have a team here my friends!!!!! And this is not counting some very high results from our multi-sport crowd this spring as well!!!
When the series concludes in three weeks, we will begin to race in Tennessee, Indiana, Georgia, Arkansas and Ohio. These races will include stage races, and Omniums. We are headed for a very outstanding racing year!!! It is all so much more than I expected!!! God Bless everyone of you - and please let me know what I can do to help you if you'd like to start racing bikes.
I think it would be neat if we could hold a "bike racing" informational seminar at the YMCA sometime soon with some classes on bike racing and some rides to get some interested persons ready to start the series in 2009.
BARNSBURG TIME TRIAL THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 6, AT 2 PM.. This is a non-sanctioned, ride at your own risk event and is open to the public. Please come out and join us.
