Cumberland Cycles News

We need anybody interested in cycling to reach out to us:

With the snowy weekend - the club will be riding at the YMCA tomorrow (Sunday - Feb 18) at 1:30 PM.  This will be a spinning class workout.  This venue could possibly be a great way for our riders-in-waiting to come out and collect some information and telephone numbers for other riders with matching levels of fitness.  Since this is an indoor workout- nobody has to worry about being dropped or slowing the "group" down or anything like that.  Getting a number of people under one roof may also facilitate the spontaneous formation of a Yellow Flag Ride and a ride for our women riders.  Please join us at the YMCA on Sunday!

While there will be a Cumberland Cycles Club Dinner sometime soon - we are planing to have the first of many social events - this one at the Doolin House Bed and Breakfast located on Main Street in downtown Somerset. Anybody and everybody is welcome.  This will be held at 7PM on Tuesday Feb 20. Walter Thompson - a lifetime endurance athlete and also my Dad will be visiting Somerset and has arranged for all of us to meet at the Doolin House. The purpose of this event is to learn more about Hammer Nutrition Products from club rider Brad Herman.  Brad will make a presentation about Hammer Products which are now available at Cumberland Cycles. Marc Travis will also give an overview of Cumberland Cycles and Skate Shop and his visions for the shop for the year.

RACING
The Kentucky/Indiana Spring Training Road Racing Series begins on March 3 in the Louisville area.  This racing series will extend all the way down to Columbia KY on March 17. This is the doing of the Lindsey Wilson College CycligTeam.  Cumberland Cycles does plan to attend these races in force (anybody who is interested).  This is the first of many road races this spring and we have some great Cat V potential!  If you have not gotten licensed - you may do so at USA Cycling or you may get a one day license at the race.  We could potentially put five or six strong Cat Vs in these races and that would be awesome!  I (JT) will not be competing in the Cat V races. I will be competing as a Cat II in the 123 races and since I will be racing without any other Cumberland Cycles Crew team member - even though I will be racing for Cumberland Cycles and I will be wearing a Cumberland Cycles Jersey - I will be loosely allied with The Indiana Hand Center Racing Team out of Indianapolis.  Since these are training races- we should approach them as exactly that - long - hard training days.  If - in any of these races- any of us get into a position to win the race - we should do so but we should not expect to win anything for some time!  We simply need to get some racing experience as a team!  With up to six fit Cat V racers - Cumberland Cycles could do well in these races - but I will be alone in my races for now.  If i can help a Hand Center Team member - I will do so - but then we will expect the same at some later date!  In other words - our Cat Vs may compete to win while I will be on a more diplomatic mission- gaining field support for our later season races.

Our team goal for this year is to move as many of our Cat Vs as we can up to Cat III by September for the Tour De London Road Race. Any wins that we may collect along the way will be "bonus" material!

Cumberland Cycles plans to conduct an eight mile club time trial in the Barnsburg area on Sunday, February 25\@ 2PM (more infomation will be emailed soon)

RECENT RIDES
Last Saturday several riders rode a completely new loop in the White Lilly Area - Kettle Head Road
.  As usual - the temps were frigid but it was a very nice ride with one significant climb.  On Sunday several more riders rode the treacherous Cannon Ball Road loop to 1003 with Roger W joining in.  (Not to tell his secrets) Roger has obviously been training all winter in his basement because he is VERY STRONG and rode at the front the entire ride!  When he hit Grundy Road back to town - he lowered the hammer on all of us and produced the most dynamic and painful chase effort in my last 3000 miles!  I was very pleased to see Roger in such great condition! Our V's certainly need to talk him in to doing the KYIN Training series - they could use him as an early breakaway.  Since Roger can obviously timetrial like an animal - I am sure he could break away and get good gaps. That would set the rest of our Vs up as passengers and even if Roger was caught - somebody else from Cumberland Cycles would be fresh enough to get a good placement!

UP AND COMING TRAINING RIDES
Sunday Feb 18 - Spinning at the YMCA at 130 PM
I have Monday off from work so I will ride 40-60 miles

I will be going to Indy on Friday so I will not ride with the group on Saturday Feb 24.  I will try to ride with the Hand Center Team in Indy.  Call Jack E or Harvey S for information regarding next Saturdays ride

Next Sunday - Feb 25:  Club Time trial event (more info forthcoming)
