Hello Crew,
I am in Utah now - My ex-wife and I attended a parents meeting today at Outback (a wilderness camp for teens) and that was really very good. Tomorrow she and I will meet some staff at the Outback offices and they will drive us out into the mountains to visit our Son! I am simply beside myself to get to see him!! While I have gotten a couple of letters from him, I have not heard his voice since I last saw him in person, when I drove him out here, May 30. This is the longest period of time, by far, that me or his Mom has not had physical contact with him in his entire life (17 years).
Jon Boy (our Son) is in a wilderness camp for young people who need a little help getting back on the right track. As far as we can tell, this program has been EXCELLENT! Jon Boy has spent the last six weeks hiking from camp to camp in the Unita Mountains of Central and Western Utah. He has not been out of the wilderness since June 1, 2008. We hear that he has assumed a leadership role with his group of youths and that he has become quite a great fire maker and has learned to make some very excellent rope jewelry.
When we first brought him to this program, he was very angry. And our first few weekly conference calls with his counselors did not go very well. But as these weeks have progressed, they (at Outback) have seen some "remarkable" changes in our Son and Katie (my ex-wife) and I are optimistic that this summer (spending it entirely in the wilderness) may have been a huge help to him.
This camp is not a "boot camp" type thing. It is a very loving and nurturing system.... They get the kids to focus on artistic things, like making rope jewelry, or making native American flutes or drums - they also hike from place to place every day, from 2 to 10 miles.... In so far as we know, Jon Boy has been hiking every day since June 1 - from place to place to place in the Unita's of Utah. Outback sends us occasional photos and he looks so good recently.
I can't wait to see him tomorrow. Outback told us that we will not be allowed to take him anything - but that if we wanted to take him a treat, then bring out a cooler of ice cold water! That he has not had a drink of ice cold water all summer.... We are planning to do just that!
MY RIDINGI have my bike with me, and I was able to ride in Colorado with the Colorado Springs cycling community. I was also able to bring my bike over to Utah in the hopes of getting to ride while here..... After our parent session, one of the Outback staff told me about a great bike lane that goes up into an awsum canyon and on up into the Wasatch. At about 6 PM, after our meeting, I went out to find this wonderful bike lane. I rode 12 miles up (and 12 miles back) into the Wasatch. The bike lane coursed along a beautiful trout stream and I saw many people fly fishing. There were many many cyclist on the route with me, but I stayed to myself. I rode the bike lane up to about the timberline then turned around to coasted back to my car - filled with the idea - I love riding my bike - and when I can do it like I did tonight - My God! Simply a beautiful thing.
Deb and I will ride from Vail to the Summit of Vail Pass next week.
RACESWe have some racing left to do this year. The Tennessee Time Trail Championships are coming up in a week or two, and I plan to do this 40 K with my Dad.
Deb and her Son, Wyatt, will race at the Western States ACA (cycling) Championships at the end of July in Salida, Colorado. Wyatt will race for his junior development team, the Front Rangers and will guest-race for Cumberland Cycles. Deb, of course, will race for Cumberland Cycles.
Walter Thompson (my Dad) will be doing the Tennessee Senior Games next week (in an attempt to qualify for Senior Nationals next year in San Francisco) as well as the Tennessee District Time Trials the week after that. He will be "flying" the Gran Fondo Colors of course, since that is his team, but we will follow him with interest since he is a friend and Sponsor of Cumberland Cycles.
We will do our Barnesburg July event on the 29th!!!!
Alanti Classic (TBRA.ORG) the first of August. BMW (TBRA.ORG) later in August, and Tour De London, Kentucky State Cycling Championships in September.
After Tour De London, the team will shut done the racing, and start training soon there after for the 2009 racing season.
ANUAL ORGANIZED CLUB RIDE
THE CUMBERLAND CYCLES/SINKING VALLEY TOUR
We will conduct an "all hands" club ride to the Sinking Valley Winery some time in the late summer or early fall. Lunch will be provided by the Cumberland Cycles Racing Team at the Sinking Valley Winery and this will be a fully supported ride - sag wagons.... rides back to town from the winery for those who don't want to do the full tour. This will be a "nobody dropped" ride, and our racing team, both multisport and road will be along to enjoy the scenery and will enjoy the "reconnect" with why we all bike in the first place - to be outside in the fresh air - seeing the greenery pass by - and enjoying other people who love to ride bikes.
Please, PLEASE try to make it to this ride.... If you ride a bike, we want you to ride with all of us to the Sinking Valley Winery. The details will be published soon. We are considering courses from 20 to 40 miles in total length.
2008 Annual Dinner
It is time to start thinking about closing off the 2008 cycling year. The 2007 venue at the Burnside Pizza Pub was great for last years annual dinner. If anybody has any ideas, please let us know. Look for a date in the third week of October.
2009 Team Sponsors
It is certainly time to start thinking about this.
2009 Team Development
2009 Team Development will begin on or about Thanksgiving, 2008 - nobody dropped until January 1, 2009. Ride Schedules will be posted on or around November 1.
