Cumberland Cycles Crew Points Standings

We had a great developmental ride tonight at Barnsburg. We got Harvey out to ride with us, and I swear, even though he's not been training since late spring, he still seems very strong!  We are glad to have him riding with us again!  Mark Henry, Glenn Gridler and Dave Stewart rode strong tonight.  Glenn is becoming quite a good climber and I look forward to seeing him race in some hilly races next year.

Mark Henry just got back from a bike tour in Maine.  Dave Stewart, DR Swanner, Rick Rice and Louie Childers spent the past weekend in North Carolina, riding up mountains. Walter Thompson, My Dad rode the Bike Ride Across Tennessee (BRAT) last week and Dave Zwick and Brian Scheleter participated in the Race for Sight Triathlon in Lexington the past weekend (Dave won his division).  Last but not least, Aaron and Jenney Deny's fall tour went off without a hitch and was a pleasant experience for everybody.

Marc Travis has is currently out in Las Vegas at a large bike show and he says that he's coming home with some great ideas and resources for our club, shop and team!

So things are well with the crew. Heading in to our fall, fun period, I would say that things are great with our cycling club/team!!!!

With one competitive event left in 2007, please allow me a deeply heart felt "thank you" to all 40 individuals who raced or rode for us this past year!  You have far exceeded my expectations!  I am humbled.

Debbie's Everyday Ride

Our Crew mate, Debbie, lives in Colorado Springs, Co, and this is a photograph of one of her dailey rides.... this is looking down on the road she rides a couple of times a week. She rides this ride from her house and it takes her about an hour to do it all!

2008 Development Begins now

http://www.cumberlandcycles.com/index.html

Hello Crew!

2008 Cumberland Cycles Racing Team Development Officially begins now

For the next six weeks, Cumberland Cycles will be promoting team/racing developmental rides on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Barnsburg starting at 6 PM. This is an open invitation for anybody even remotely interested in bicycle racing to come out and join the club/team in our early 2008 foundation/fun period. From now until the time change on October 28, 2007 - the Barnsburg rides will be considered "nobody dropped" and developmental. Please feel free to come out and ride with us as we will turn down the intensity a great deal!!!!  Several of our seasoned racers are now taking some time off from high intensity training and would love to be involved in bringing up several more racers for the 2008 racing season.

Some of our stronger riders will ride away from the group on some of these rides, and that is ok. But we want to develop a steady group, averaging 13-16 mph over 12-20 miles every Tuesday and Thursday from now until the time change (Oct 28).

NOW IS THE TIME TO START!!!  Just get on your bike, ride easy with us for a few weeks and then we will begin to put an edge on the team this winter. Remember, the team will begin more intense training beginning the first weekend in November, so you have the perfect amount of time to take off with us for next year!!  Even if you have not been riding, you can get into shape for winter training!

Saturday and Sunday rides will continue to be a bit intense (length wise) for our 2007 racing team at least for the next couple of weeks. But later in the fall, we will start Saturday and Sunday developmental rides as well.

Annual Dinner!

Saturday:  October 6th, 7 PM - Lakeside Pizza and Pub - No RSVP necessary!

Since this is our first year, we will have everybody order and pay for their own meals and drinks.

Show up and eat pizza and drink beer with all the other sport, road or mountain bikers in our town!!!  Marc Travis will be our evenings MC, so whatever he wants to do with us, we'll be at his mercy for at least a few minutes!  We will recognize our 2007 outstanding cyclists!  We will eat pizza and drink beer or soda's and we will integrate and talk about next year!  Weather permitting, the event will be held on the patio - but if the weather is foul, we will have it inside. Please, please join us.

We want to thank our Colorado based, Cumberland Cycles Crew Mate, Debra Fortenberry for negotiating an alternate venue for our dinner at the last minute!  We also want to thank the Doolin House in aiding us in finding a more appropriate venue for our dinner.

The Final Barnsburg Time Trial Event (#7)
will be held the day after our dinner, on Sunday October 7th, first rider off at 2 PM!  Come out and join us for our final club event!!!!!  If you come to the dinner, you might as well post a time the next day!!!!!

Remember to support Cumberland Cycles in any way you possibly can!!!

Jack Evans beats national TT champion recently

Jack Evans recently edged out the current Masters National Time Trial Champion in last weeks Tomato Head Crit!

G. Turner Howard III of Knox Velo's Melting Pot squad placed 6th in the TT out of 65 competitors in 27:20 for the 20K course and was the first American. To give an idea of how competitive Worlds are, Turner's National 20K TT (which he won the Gold medal in July) would have placed him 19th. Turner is no rookie at competing at the world level; he won a bronze medal in 2002 Masters Worlds. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Cumberland Cycles Club Points Winner to be Crowed Soon

I don't believe that anybody is going to catch Mr. Aaron Denney in our club points race!  We have one race left - our own Barnsburg Time Trial.  It would be impossible for anybody to catch Aaron now.  So congratulations to our club points winner!!!!

Crew News - September 16

http://www.cumberlandcycles.com/index.html

Hello Crew!

Tennessee District Team Time Trial Championships and Criterium

Cumberland Cycles Crew Mates Jeff Parmelee, Jack Evans, Aaron Denney and Roger Whitlock participated in the Tennessee Time Trial District Championships as a Category V team and they won their division! As a team, the four of them worked together to cover the 25 miles in as fast a time as possible. Their time was 60:54!  Over all they placed 9th out of 15 teams!  This is really great, and hats off to the four of them!

Jack Evans also participated in the Individual time trial and placed 9th. Finally, Jack and Aaron Denney both participated in the Criterium event.  While Aaron was off the front with three laps to go, he crashed by taking a corner to fast and too hard.  Aaron did not finish the race even though he was poises to win! What a "heart breaker"!!!!!!!

Jack Evans placed 2nd in his crit, edging out a fellow who has placed 6th in the World Championships recently!!!!  Jack is certain a great crit rider and he continues to place well in the Tennessee Circuit!

At present
I am on my way to Colorado for some much needed R&R with Debbie and her kids. This is my off time and I plan to take at least 6 weeks off from serious training.   I will be riding during this time but only in an non-structured manner.  I want to ride with younger, newer riders and bring a couple of more riders up into the racing ranks for next year. I will post a ride schedule soon; but in short, we will continue the Barnsburg rides @ 6 PM on Tuesday and Thursday - but I will not be riding aggressively until the first of November. So if you'd like to come out and spin with me, please just show up on Tuesday or Thursday at Barnsburg at 6 PM and I will ride with you and answer any questions you might have about racing and or training for 2008.

Saturday and Sunday will have rides throughout the fall - and these will be developmental/foundation rides for anybody who is considering racing for our team next year. We will post ride information on a weekly basis.

I will recap out year in more detail soon, but let me just mention that we had folks in 70 different events with 242 individual starts!  Everybody out there, Gran Fondo, Texas Road House, Papa Johns, Bike Zoo, Honda/Dancing Bear, Melting Pot and other great teams know who we are now, and we are poised to have a great 2008 season.

When I am more rested, I plan to write a complete summary of our 2007 racing season!!!!!

Year End Dinner
Our Year-end Dinner will be held at the Doolin House on Saturday, October 6th at 7 PM.   Please RSVP by October 1, by calling the bike shop or emailing JT at Moonsovrbend@aol.com.

Our Final Sanctioned Event

http://www.cumberlandcycles.com/index.html

Hello Crew -

My racing year will end this weekend.  I am so much looking forward to backpacking and trout fishing over the next six weeks.  Over the last nine months, I have participated in 29 races and points events. It has been a wonderful year for me.

I am very much looking forward to The Tour De London, and having my team and club out there with all of us. This will be a wonderful finish to our racing year. As it turns out, we have some very significant competition showing up for the races, so it will be brutal - downright violent bike riding for two days. I think our best and great hope for a win is Mr. Adam Bourne, in the CAT 4/5 race, as well as Aaron Denney in the CAT 4/5 Race as well.

Our masters, JT, Jack Evans, Roger Whitlock and Jeff Ekoniack will have our work cut out for them as we will clash with some powerful teams and some very accomplished riders.

Charlie Bailey and Jenney Denney will have to content with Ms. Tracy Huber, a National Champion.... so needless to say, we have our work cut out for us!!!!

But I love it!!!!  This is turning to be a fine race!

We want to thank Dave Gribsby for all of his hard work. Unfortunately, Dave is having some complications due to a recent surgery, so while we want to thank him for putting this event together, we also want to remember him in our prayers.  As a club, we want to wish him well and wish him a speedy recovery. I can't imagine how Dave must feel... his event coming together at a time he may not even be able to show up.

Marc Travis and the Cumberland Cycles Shop is shutting their doors on Saturday and Sunday to come to the event and support all of our riders!  This is a significant show of support from our major sponsor and we want to thank Marc for his time and effort and money. Marc will be setting up an tent/relaxation station for our club members and our riders. Be sure to center yourself at or near the Cumberland Cycles Location!

I guess that is about it, folks. We've all put in a hard racing, touring and training year and in my opinion, it has paid incredible dividends. I can't even begin to describe how proud I am of everybody who has raced, or trained of toured for us. Please, everybody, pat yourselves on the back.... and remember to thank Marc Travis and Cumberland Cycles for providing us with a nucleolus upon which to work.

After this weekend, I plan to put my bike away... I plan to trout fish, and back pack and visit my sweetheart in Colorado. We will have our dinner at the Doolin House on Oct 6 and then on November 1st, we will begin to develop our team for 2008.  I will continue the blog at that time (as long as everybody still wants me to be the team captain)

In closing
God Bless Dave in London - we hope for his speedy recovery
Thank you to Marc Travis for supporting us this year
Thank you to the 36 riders who competed for us this year

And especially - we wish for all of our riders to have a safe, and successful event in our  final race...

Fall Tour!!

Tri-County Metric Century

Jenny and I (Aaron) would like to invite any club/team members and friends to join us on a non-supported group ride on September 22nd. The ride is about 63 miles and is considered a metric century. There are several large climbs along this route, but it is a fun one. Read the full description at my blog by clicking the link below. Please RSVP to my e-mail: aaron.denney@accessextreme.com if you wish to ride with us. I want to know who all is coming plus have some contact information in case a problem arises. Also bring cash for stops and wear your Cumberland Cycles Crew Jersey if you have one. This is only the first of many rides we will lead during the coming years.

my first year back

Hello Crew!

Well, my first 365 days on the bike came and went without my notice. Last night I went back to my training log and realized that I had ridden 7,993 miles in 365 days. I thought it was more than that, but that is good. The previous 19 years, I didn't touch a bike hardly.

I think I started about 18 races this year and I am pleased with the year that I had.  I am pleased with my starts and finishes. I am pleased with the people who are riding and training and racing with me.  I am pleased with our Shop and Marc Travis.

I just wanted to thank everybody for being so enthusiastic about bike racing this year and accepting me and my Blog into our local cycling community.

There are many people I need to thank at this first year anniversary back on a bike, but I think it was Harvey Scheleter who took me under his wing first and fostered a kind and gentle platform upon which I was able to find confidence and companionship that lead me to a great year back on the bike.

It has been a very nice year. I feel very good about what we've done here and I am hopeful for the future of our team and club. We have some fantastic riders here in Somerset, and I value each and everyone of you so very much.

So, if you have one more moment, please allow me to say thank you... You have exceeded my expectations greatly. I have learned a lot from you, and Marc and we have had some great fun. And from it, it will get better and better!

News September 2

Hello Crew!

BARNSBURG TIME TRIAL SERIES EVENT #6 RESULTS

We had a good turnout for today's, 6th 2007 Barnsburg time trial event. Thirteen Cumberland Cycles racers, multi-sports and club riders turned out for the event, and we want to thank each and everyone of them.

Being put under a clock in a public setting is never a comfortable thing to do, but to do so as a new rider - well, it takes a lot of internal courage.  Unimaginable, really. I've raced in several hundred races, and I get nervous before every one of them. I really want to send out a heart-felt pat on the back to our new riders!  Races are hardest on you. I also want to praise our club riders who come out to participate.  What these people are doing - posting times in an event that is extremely demanding and painful - just goes to show the depth and character of the people on and behind our team and club.

As for our racers - Sanctioned and Muti-sport, We've had a great year and I want to thank everybody for coming out to participate, not only in our club series, but in all of the events this year. We still have a little bit to go, but I am so very pleased with our first year!

MR. AARON DENNEYPOSTS THE FASTEST TIME OF EVENT #6 at 20:10 for the eight miles!  Congratulations to Aaron!  We had several  personal records set today... In fact, we had six PRs. This almost half the field.  And what is amazing, the conditions are the course today were slow!  The air was thick and muggy with a strong return head wind. Times would have been faster in different conditions!  Take me for an example. I was about a minute and a half off my fastest time on the course.

We have a lot of folks getting a lot stronger, but stronger than these results indicate!  On a good, still day, with no humidity or wind, I bet we'd have several riders going under 20 minutes!

Barnsburg Time Trial Event #7 - Final Event
Barnsburg Event #7 will be held in three to six weeks. Stay tuned!
