July 12 News

Hello Crew!

Since we are an official USA Cycling Club, our officers, Jack Evans and Marc Travis have some powers!  All this will need to be worked out officially in some sort of bylaws or constitution how our club will conduct it's business, but today was a good example of leadership on the part of Jack Evans, our Vice Pres.

Unfortunately, I went out for a fifty mile ride and forgot to put my helmet on.  After ten miles, I realized it, but did not turn around to retrieve the helmet. I honestly left it on my front porch (it was kind of a tough day, and I'm blond). Anyway, Jack was riding out of town as I was riding in, and I stopped to say hi to Jack. He told me, that since he was a club officer, he was going to dock me 10 club points for not having on my helmet!!  What a great idea. I agreed to the punishment and I thanked Jack for his concern!  So I actually added a "penalty" column in our points sheet and I am the first one to receive a penalty!  How Funny!

Obviously, we can not make anybody ride safely, but we can use our club points system as encouragement!  In fact, we can use our points system to do all kinds of things. I think we ought to have Jack or Marc dock Adam Bourne about 150 points for climbing every hill he comes to faster than anybody else!

BARNSBURG TIME TRIAL
Be sure to show up for our fifth 2007 Barnsburg Event on Sunday, July 22 - First rider off at 2 PM.  Please check in at the Barnsburg Church between 1 PM and 1:45 PM. You don't have to be a racer to post a time.  Please come on out and post a time for any reason what so ever.... especially to monitor your own fitness over the next few months or years!

PROPOSED ANO TIME TRAIL (40k) For August
I think it would be great to conduct one 40K  time trial this year.  It would leave and come back to Shopville School.  It would go down old 80, then turn south on 1003.  The course would go to 1675 and go back north through the Ano area, back to old HW 80.  Then come back to the Shopville School. There would be two unmarshalled crossings of kentucky highway 80 and if riders get stopped by traffic, then so be it. This is a 25 mile course, and it will take even our strongest cyclistabout an hour and 20 minutes to complete it. So getting stopped for a second or two to cross the highway will not add up to much.

This would be a very difficult and long time trial and I would love to see if we could get some interest.

Feedback requested.

Rides
We always ride from Barnsburg Church every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6 PM.  Please show up for the club or team rides at that time.

THE NANCY 55 MILE RIDE WILL BE CONDUCTED THIS SATURDAY AT THE NANCY POST OFFICE AT 7 AM.

Year End Celebrations and Focus on 2008 -

GUEST SPEAKER:  Mr. Robert Brooks, USCF Coach and CAT II road cyclist

We plan to have a year-end dinner on October 6th. We will award the Cumberland Cycles Point Winner a check for $300 and we will have a great time.  Be sure to watch for details.

Remember that 2008 racing will begin as early as January, but certainly by the end of February. We will begin training as a team, November 3, 2007 - Foundation riding (senior team members help train new members).  Foundation training will last until about Christmas 2008 - nobody dropped - anybody and everybody welcome. By the new year, the team will need to isolate and accelerate the training level which may begin to exclude anybody not able to stay within 2 minutes of any course change.

If you are a cyclist, please consider racing for us next year! We can get you in shape and help you a great deal.

Remember to support Cumberland Cycles in any way possible!!!!!! As Marc Says, "Ride on" - "Live Strong"
