Barnsburg Time Trial #4 - June 26
A total of twelve riders braved the mid-summer heat and posted a time in our 4th Barnsburg Time Trial of the Season. The temperature was hot, and so were the times! Even though a new course record was not set, Mr. David Hays posted the fastest time of the day at 19:25. David currently holds the course record at 18:22. JT was only 9 seconds behind David with a time of 19:34 and Adam Bourne broke the 20 minute barrier coming in just ten seconds behind JT at 19:44.
The event produced five personal records (PR) for this course and we are very pleased with the turnout and the times!
The 5th Barnsburg Event will be held on Sunday, July 22, first rider off at 2 PM.
Mid-SummerTeam/Club Ride Saturday
Roger Whitlock will be hosting a very nice 55 mile ride in the western Pulaski County area this coming Saturday Morning. It is my understanding that this is a very nice ride and he is asking everybody to come out and join him for this 2007 "mid-point" summer ride. It will begin at 7 AM at the Nancy Post office. YEAR END RACING
Although I have been very busy with my son this summer, I do plan to race in August and September! There are some really good year end races coming up and I plan to get back into peak condition for the Tour De London.
We would also like to announce that Brad Hermann is organizing a circuit race for the Burnside Festival (Formally known as the Catfish Festival). It will be held on about September 15, 2007. Brad is doing a great job meeting with the folks from Burnside - selecting a course - getting it all organized. I think the event will be very attractive this year and should be a very exposed event for our club. Wewant to begin to encourage EVERYBODY in the club to come out and participate in this event. We already have approval from the Highway Department to close down part of US HW 27 in front of Reno's.
This will be a non-sanctioned club event, open to anybody with a bike. It appears that there will be two racing categories, experienced and novice. The experienced competitors field would consist of anybody who has ever raced in a bike race or multisport event. The novice field would consist of anybody would has never raced but would like to see what it is like.

Cool 5 K Run and Walk
COOL 5 K RUN WALK
I haven't ran a grand total of one mile in the last twenty years, but today, I ran 3.1 miles - in a race no less, and I loved it. The Sumernites Cruise 5 K Cool Run and Walk was held today and we had several club/team members either participate in the race directly, or organized it.
We had a total of five Crew members participate in the race: Adam Bourne, Charlie Bailey, JT, DR Swanner and Dave Stewart. We had a total of four other club/team members directing the race. These are Jeff Parmelee, Jack Evans, Dave Zwick and new comer, Carrie Altmaier.
All of these club members received 20 points for their participation in the event, and the ones who raced, received placement points on our usual schedule. As a result, we've had quite a change in our points standings. Be sure to link to our blog and see our club points standings. Cumberland Cycles Crew Points Standings
Club members, Dave Stewart, DR Swanner and Adam Bourne all won FIRST PLACE in their categories. As a result, they got an extra 25 placement points in our club points standings. Charlie Bailey came out of the race with a total of 40 participation points, because not only did she finish the race, she pushed her son, Guy, in a stroller as well, so we are figuring that as a total of two club members completing the race! And JT finished his race 3rd in his age division, so he also received extra points.
We also awarded club members Dave, Jeff, Jack and Carrie 20 points for participating in the race in an organizational fashion.

Maybe next year we can get a bike race organized with the Summernights Cruise as well!

We will meet at the Vision Center on Sunday at 2 PM for a long team ride. Hope to see you there.

This is an eight mile time trial along Barnsburg Road - out and back (4 miles then turn around). Staging and parking will be at Barnsburg Church, but the start/finish is located one mile west of the church on Barnsburg Road.
Remember, the 7 PM starting is "first rider off" and you need to get checked in and get your start time between 6 and 645 PM at Barnsburg Church.
We are hoping for a good turnout.

Hello Crew!
Weekend of June 23
Sumernites Cruise 5K Cool Run and Walk is going on Saturday, registration is from 5 PM to 6:30 PM. As a cycling club, we don't generally award points for non cycling or multisport events. But any individual participating in June 23, Cool Run at Somernights Cruise wearing a Cumberland Cycles Jersey will earn the large sum of 20 points in our club standings and then will be awarded additional placement points based on our usual schedule.
I am not much of a runner... I can't run 100 yards, but I plan to participate in the event to support our cycling club and to support the multisport athletes and runners in our community the same way they have supported our team this year. I would like to have our cycling club turn out and support our members who have helped plan and organize the event.
I am glad that the title of the event includes the words "Run" and "Walk" because I will probably just walk most of the course!

Hello Crew!
Club Points Run
Mr. Aaron Denney has charged up from 8th to 5th in our club points and will probably soon over take several other club members. Aaron and his wife, Jenny, are currently out in the Midwest taking advantage of some good summer racing. His participation in these summer events wearing CCC Colors is much appreciated, and I anticipate that he will collect a lot of points on this summer tour of racing they are on.

2008 Uniforms and Preparations
We are looking for a crew member who might take the lead on our 2008 Uniforms. This would include scheduling a meeting to discuss our 2008 uniform design. This volunteer would take ideas from the rest of the crew members, look at other teams uniforms, work with Marc Travis and ultimately provide Cumberland Cycles with suggestions on what our needs might be for 2008. We are behind so we need to move quickly.
The Crew needs to redesign the current uniform - and we want to do so with input from as many individuals as possible. We want to look great for our 2008 season... so if you are interested in this kind of service work for our team, please let me or Marc Travis know!
As For Me
With my 16 year old son home for the summer, it is a busy time for me. I am training every day, but my LSD (weekly) miles have caved in considerably, and my fitness is suffering... But that is ok. I have some obligations that are difficult to coordinate with my cycling life and this is the way it has to be. I will try to compete once more in June and once again in July, but then return to "full-bore" racing in August in preparation for the Tour De London in September.
After the Tour De London, I plan to hike up Mount Leconte and fish for trout until the First of November when I will begin to prepare for 2008! I think it would be nice if we could arrange for a club hike up Mount LeConte this fall! LeConte Lodge

I don't believe I've ever known a summer, at least as an amiture cyclist, where the cycling did not cave in a little bit during June and July. With the Rush of the Spring Racing over, the summer racing always seemed unimportant and unexciting to me... Not that there are no races... Our own Aaron Denny is going to be racing a lot this June and July. But it seems that the really important spring races are done now.... and the next really important races will be in August and especially September. As for me, It seems I have always taken June and July "off" from racing - it never seemed to matter as much as spring or fall events.
Which isn't to say that we can take the summer off! No not at all. We all need to race as much as we can or at least train in order to maintain as much of our spring conditioning as we can for the fall and the following year. It seems to me, now is the time to have fun on our bikes... tours - club rides and the occasional weekend crit.
The numbers are down for our club and team rides at Barnsburg and that is expected if not normal. Summers are busy for our team club members - and we can't always show up in the numbers that we did in the spring... and this is just fine. It doesn't mean that our club and team is caving in... it simply means that we are normal!
With that said, I would like everybody to focus on two things.... The Tour De London in September and the 2008 Spring Racing Series. Some of our riders need to spend the summer putting down good foundations for the fall and next spring racing seasons. Others of us need to focus on maintenance. I don't care who you are or what your experience is. We can get you ready to race for next year and with some success!!! Now is the time to get motivated about 2008!
We will continue to meet at Barnsburg every Tuesday and Thursday at the established times and on weekends as well. Cycling is a summer activity, but it seems that racing is an activity best served up in the cool of spring and fall. But we certainly want to wish our summer die-hard racing fans (Aaron) great luck!

Cumberland Cycles Racing Results and other info
Hello Crew!
We want to congratulate Cumberland Cycles Multisport Athletes Mark Henry and Nick Cabrini for their starts and finishes in last Saturdays Shelbyville Chiropractic Triathlon in Shelbyville Kentucky! Nic got 4th place in his division and Mark Henry got second in his, with the fastest bike split! Now that's what we love to hear!
Road cyclist, Aaron Denney participated in the ABR Red River Gorge Stage Race last weekend as well, but after winning a prim lap in the crit, he was caught behind a bad crash and went down and was knocked out for a few moments!
All three of these Crew Members made large leaps up in our club points standings!!!!
