The Series is over - What Now? Lots!

 

 

 

Well Crew, The Kentucky Indiana Series is now over (and it is time to go on to stage racing throughout the south, east and mid-west). Adam Bourne and Jay Garman participated in the Henryville Road Race Classic on Saturday and JT participated in the Long Run Circuit Race on Sunday. Everybody finished with main field finishes in the series over the weekend, but nobody scored (top 15 places).

In terms of the 2008 Spring Series, Cumberland Cycles Racing Team had 42 individual starts in Series Races. These individuals include:

In addition to this overwhelming participation by our races in the series, we put on one of the eight events... Mt. Victory Road Race, which was a smashing success!!!!  This is not a racing team success, but a club success!!! 

WHAT NOW? lots and lots, but not for a couple of weeks
This Saturday, April 26, the team will ride 60 - 80 miles to Laurel River Dam.  This ride will be supported and will recollect itself every 15 miles or so.

Barnsburg Time Trial Event #3 - April 27 at 2 pm

May 3, 3-State 3-Mountain This is a very difficult "tour" and will be great training for our first very series race of the year, Highland Rim.

Then in May, we will begin to race the Tennessee Series and other races for the remainder of the year!  Here is the Tennessee Schedule:   ::The Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association::

April 19 - a Busy Race Day!!!!

The "Crew" put 9 racers in the field today in a very scattered fashion.  Jenny and Aaron Denney Raced in central Indiana (IRS), with Jay Garman and Adam Bourne racing the 7th race of the series in Henryville, Indiana.  Jack Evans and Roger Whitlock raced in Knoxville in the South Knoxville Road Race and Time Trial and Mark Henry, Nick Cabrinni and DR Swanner raced in the Heart and Soul Tri in Versailles, KY.  Finally, David Altmaier raced in the Panama City Emerald Coast Tri.

JT and Charles Senters plan to race in the Kentucky/Indiana Final Race tomorrow in Louisville. Jack Evans plans to race the Knoxville Crit tomarrow as well.

DATA:  to-date, we have had 231 riders begin 38 crew-paying points events. This is an agerage of 6.1 riders per event.

Kentucky /Indiana Series Scoring

The KY/IN Spring Series pays points 15 deep. You must place in the top 15 to win series points.

My Friends -

Having raced the last seven consecutive weekends - logging 11,000 miles on the bike in the past 18 months, it occurs to me at times in my life, I can be too focused. 

I love to fish for trout.... I love to go back packing.  I love to hunt gensing and look for wild flowers and I love to float small creeks in small boats with good friends.

Deep in the midst of this spring racing season, I took this Sunday to spend time with my friend, Harvey, floating down Pitman Creek in a canoe. I did not turn a bicycle crank today, and I was proud of myself for it. It was a cold, blustery day, but many wild flowers were blooming in the woods - the creek was charged with the rains of the recent storms.  With my good friend right there in front of me - both of us in a narrow boat, we navigated the many rocks and logs and fast water of the stream... The day, not ideal for a river outing by any means; our hands cold in the gentle rain and mild wind - some would have considered it down right miserable... But my friend and I floated our boat under an overhanging rock and we ate pretzelized goldfish - a snack Harvey's wife tossed to him just as he was leaving for his adventure with me. Even though I was physically cold, I was warm inside - glowing in the company of my good friend - glowing in the mists of the woods and wildflowers of my homeland - aboard a small boat on a small stream...

In these days of racing and training, it is not often I get to "mingle with the twinkling stars" - slow Sundays on a creek with a good friend and a bag of "gold fish" in a fine boat on an excellent stream, don't come cheap.  I had no idea what my team mates were doing.. But I needed time to shake hands with the basics... just like all of us... As a community.  We all have so much upon us....

Mark, Marc, Jeff, Harvey, Jack and so many others have businesses to run.... Chuck and Melenda are having a baby soon. Brad, and Adam with their new jobs - and me - worried sick about my son and where the heck he is going to spend his summer..... Kerry and his family who have just lost their father.

The cycling club I envision is not the one that is totally cycling performance based... but a community of people who are rising to meet their individual challenges... and then finding time to rideor race bicycles. I personally don't care if you ever race or win or even turn a crank.... our common ground is that we like to ride bicycles and we are human beings. We need to support each other no matter what our cycling goals are - not matter what our situations.

Harvey sat in the boat in front of me today - in the cold rain on a small boat, on a small stream that was cranking lots of fast water. He sat up there all day in his funny hat and his poncho that made his look like batman. Harvey is one of the most gifted cyclists I know, yet he does not chose to race. Harvey is my friend and I value him even though he has never won the tour de France.  

Racing bikes in 1 part in 99 - in terms of the "human experience" for me. Cycling is simply a physical outlet... It is the experience that I am interested in.... Wildflowers... woods - caves, rocks and streams... but mostly - Mostly Friends......

Let us all hold the Family of Kerry Fain in our Prayers

 

Kerry is one of our most enthusiastic club riders, and his father Bill, whom I've known for 30 or more years, passed away last night.   Ironically, I had seen Bill that day, and he seem healthy and vibrant and happy. I feel fortunate to have seen bill on his last day.

 

Kerry, Bill, and their entire family are good people. I plan to spend time with Kerry and his family this week. If you feel so inclined, there will be a "wake" on Monday and the funeral on Tuesday. I will provide more information later.

 

Kerry is one of ours... I personally intend to support him in any way he needs.

 

As a club, let us ask GOD to BLESS BILL FAIN and his family.

Race #6 of 8 of the Spring Series - Iroquois Park

Race #6 of 8 was held today in Louisville and Jack Evans and JT attended the Iroquois Park Circut Race. JT raced in the 3/4 event and Jack Raced in the 4/5 Masters Event. Both were very happy with their results.

The course was a very fast, narrow, one lane wooded slab of asphalt running three miles through this Louisville Urban park. The curves, climbs, descents and bad road surface made the race harrowing!  Both fields were packed with JT and Jack risking life and limb just to hang on to this very fast race! 

JT held on to the main field for an 8th place pack finish (11th over all) and Jack stayed with the main field for a 7th place finish!!!

Addtionally, Mr. David Ponder, from Casey County, a Cumberland Cycles MTB rider raced today in 2008 Mountian Bike Racing Series and won his division!!!!!  Now that is what we like to see!!!!!  Here is the link for that MTB Series.
