Tour De London Course Recon
Tour De London Recon Ride
Cumberland Cycles Team members, Roger Whitlock, Jack Evans, JT, DR Swanner, Dave Stewart and Nick Cabrinni all went over to London this morning to meet with some folks from the London Bike Shop to recon the Tour De London Road Race Course. It was a great, and cohesive ride with everybody staying together. Our pace was quick at about 18.5 MPH and the relief over the 41 mile loop was about 2000 feeet. Our club time trial specialist, Roger Whitlock (affectionately known as "Roe-shey") was at or off the front the entire day. A true hammer head Roger is, and he considers sitting in the wheels for the weak! That is why he has been placing 3rd and 4th in regional sanctioned Time Trials this summer!
For our course ride, Jack stayed on Rogers wheel most of the day and launched a couple of attacks as did JT... But in the end, Jack and JT were content to let Roe-Shey pull the train down the rail.
Dave S. launched two very significant attacks over the course of which Jack and JT benefited greatly. DR was able to attack and bridge back up to Roe-Shey late in the ride as well. Nick rode consistently.
We want to thank David, our tour guide from the London shop. He was very strong and was always right with us!

Tour De London Promotion

September 8th and 9th is the 2nd annual Tour De London road race and Criterium. This year we are also the official USA Cycling Kentucky State Championships for road and criterium.
I wanted to first invite all of you to come down. Come and race, or come and volunteer, or just come a watch. Its all good.
We need volunteers for the following positions:
Corner marshal - piece of cake job where you simple wave riders safely through the various corners along the course and hold up any oncoming traffic that might impede them. Hey, you get a free Volunteer t shirt too.
Motorcycle or vehicle lead- another really fun job. You basically stay about 50 to 100 yards in front of the peleton with your flashers on to keep any oncoming traffic aware that a group of crazy cyclists are about to come by. One of the most fun jobs in a race. Quiet motorcycles preferred as the Harley types can give the leaders a serious headache after a while. LOL.
Follow/wheel truck- Bring your pick up truck and we will fill it full of spare wheels. Follow the group around and if a rider has a flat, just stop. Its the riders responsibility to get his wheel and make any repairs. My mom can do this one. 
But most of all we want you to come down. Even if you just want to watch. Its all good.

Notice that the winner of each main category who is a resident of Kentucky will win a Yellow State Champion Jersey.
As always we have lots of people jumping into the citizens’ category just to finish the event, another great way to do this beautiful course.
The course is all marked, so feel free to come down and pre-ride the thing. Huge Green arrows mark the first half, and huge red arrows mark the return trip. Huge White arrows marked 'HC' are for the 2 shortcuts used by the hand-cycle division and the 2 youngest Juniors categories for an 18-mile loop.
Anyway, please help me spread the word if you will. Feel free to paste this message on any other forum or message board you like so we can make this one of the premier cycling events in our state. Tour De London is all non-profit. If we ever see any returns it will be put right back into the race for prizes, signs, new categories, bigger payouts, you name it. Next year, we hope to add a Time Trial to make this race an Omnium.

Cumberland Cycles Tour De London Course Ride - Saturday, August 18th. Anybody interested in riding the up and coming Tour De London Course this Saturday morning, is encouraged to meet at Barnsburg Church at 8 AM. We will "caravan" from Barnsburg over to London and ride the course. The actual race will be held on September 8, 2007.

Crew News - August 15
Hello Crew!
Barnsburg Rides
It appears that our non-racing crowd is far out numbering our racing crowd. This is really very good. Tuesday and Thursday nights at Barnsburg with the team ride are inevitably contested. And that is not always good for our crew. Yes, our racers need hard workouts, but we also need to foster development for our up-and-coming riders. I was really glad to see about 12 medium pace riders show up at Barnsburg tonight and go out for a ride. This is exactly what our club needs at this point in our first year.
I think we had about 20 riders out at Barnsburg tonight and that was great. The medium paced folks left out earlier but then the five racers left and caught up with them. Some of the mediums left that crew and joined the racers.... Three notable performances tonight were that of Mr. Jay Garmann. He placed the entire group under general attack and he has certainly gotten much stronger this summer! We want to congratulate him and encourage him to keep coming out because he has the makings of a great racer. Dave Stewart and DR Swanner, our two top multi-sport athletes are getting very strong on the bikes.

There are not very many races left in the year. We have BMW in Chattanooga, at least one more club time trial, probably two, tour de London and then our own Burn side Race. Some of our club members have been extremely active this year and I am so very proud of what we have done here this year! We have become noticed regionally in our races - and this is thanks to club members JT, Jack Evans, Aaron Denney, Brad Hermann, Adam Bourne, Roger Whitlock, Charlie Bailey and others. We have several riders ranked #1 in the State of Kentucky in their age and cat divisions. What more could a team captain ask for?
Let us now look to the Tour De London - the Kentucky State Championships, and see if we can't pull off some really high finishes.

We will have our first annual dinner on October 6th at the Doolin House, in down town Somerset. We need for everybody to RSVP so that we know how much food to order! We will send out RSVP instructions later.
